The Internet is filled with a number of cool places. Below I'll try to list a number of sites that I think may be deserving of Your attention attention.
General | Boredom | Computers | Ling/Lang | Cycling | Bands | Guitar | People
General
- Google - If you don't know what this is, you probably haven't been on the Internet much before now. The best search engine ever. It can find anything.
- The Wikipedia - If you are looking for information about anything, it is here. It is a free, open-source encyclopedia that anybody can edit. Very cool. In combination with Google, you could probably learn every secret of the Universe.
Things to do when you're bored
- Live Journal - Live Journal is a free open-source blogging service (and the one I use). I recommend it.
- MySpace - What's the best way to make you feel like you're in high school even when you aren't? Join MySpace. Don't ask me why I did.
- thefacebook - A MySpace-like service, but it's more about creating social networks at colleges. Kind of cool, and definitely more laid-back than MySpace.
Computers and Software
- Mozilla Firefox - Firefox is a safe, open-source internet browser. Microsoft Internet Explorer is prone to security flaws and Netscape is based on much older Mozilla browsers. It's time to get up to date. Get Firefox.
- Sourceforge - Lots of free software, a lot of it is Open Source, and a lot of it is really cool.
- LinuxISO.org - Download any linux distro you like. A good resource.
- Fedora Project - This is the version of linux I use.
Linguistics, Language, and such...
- Omniglot - This site is a database of just about every writing system on the planet. Porn for linguists.
- The Online Etymology Dictionary - Find out where English words came from. Seriously cool.
- The Wiktionary - Like the Wikipedia, but for words.
- Lexin on the Swedish Schoolnet - Sweden's own online Swedish - English dictionary.
- WordReference.com - Probably the most comprehensive online Spanish - English dictionary I've found, and it does French and Italian too.
- >Unilang.org Wiki - A wiki for languages. Just starting and needs a lot of help. Check out the website it is a part of (I haven't).
Cycling
Bands
- Opeth - Maybe the best band ever. From Stockholm, Sweden, these guys play a very interesting mix of Melodic Death Metal and 70's Progressive Rock.
- Vornagar - From Los Gatos, California, Vornagar is not only the coolest metal band I've heard in a while, but I'm also friends with all of the guys in the band. Viking Death Metal. For more on them, see my Metal page.
- Sonata Arctica - Fast classical-inspired power metal from Finland. These guys are great, though unfortunately condemned to obscurity.
- Blind Guardian - Awesome German power metal band with a nice choral backing.
- Jon Bon Jovi - This is not a joke. Slippery when wet.
Things for Musicians and Guitarists
- Power Tab - Powertab is a freeware tablature editor for guitar and other similar instruments. A lovely program, but unfortunately, Windows only.
- Power Tab Archive - Plenty of free tablatures to go with Power Tab.
- EMG Pickups - These guitar pickups have become almost the standard for the Metal sound. I use one, Metallica uses them, Blind Guardian uses them, and so do countless other bands.
- Lark in the Morning - The Lark in the Morning is a store in San Francisco which has tons of the most bizarre instruments you'll ever see. This is their website.
- Musician's Friend - Rather popular online guitar/music store. I've bought a few things from them before, so I'd figure I'd include it.
People I Know
- Nightwings.net - My friend Stephanie's web site. I think she's opening a new one soon to replace this one.
- Workin' - My roomate has a webpage sort of thing. Not much there, but check out the videos we made last year.
- Matt's Homepage - Matt, a friend of mine from high school.
- The SheDevil's Lair - Ica's website. I can't even begin to describe it.
- Pete's Cool Homepage - This is an old Scoutmaster of mine.
- Zenith Fallen - Kestrel's website.
