Triggers

While the cause of Meniere's Disease is unknown, there are known "triggers" that can bring on or increase symptoms.  Many patients report that they will have an attack (a sudden onset of or increase in symptom intensity) after experiencing the following triggers:

Salt - Many patients report that they experience attacks following the ingestion of salty foods - like pizza.

Caffeine

Alcohol

Stress - Although hard to quantify, stress seems to play a role in Meniere's Disease.

Allergies - Allergies are believed by many to have an undefined role in Meniere's; perhaps as a cause, or perhaps as a trigger.

Menstruation - Many female patients experience symptoms in conjunction with menstruation.

Pregnancy - Some patients report that their symptoms first appeared either during pregnancy or soon after delivery.

Visual Stimuli - Many patients report that certain visual events, especially parallel vertical lines, will trigger dizziness and other symptoms.  Some examples are: streets and highways lined with trees or telephone poles, supermarket aisles, and some motion pictures.
