ARTIST'S STATEMENT

GAIL FLACK CRANDUS

I was identified and profiled as an artist in second grade by my teacher in a Chicago Public School. This is when the religious warfare began.

I grew up in an ethnic American community. From this austere community I embarked on my career as an artist. Just to paint or draw pictures of the Bible (Old Testament) is a challenge, but I portray them in unorthodox ways just to bring out the passion of the characters. I use mark making and layering techniques which I have learned from Frank Piatek and Seurat and Van Gogh. I also try and pattern my art making work in many ways, after the early Christian way of art.

It is also challenging to do art animations of children's' stories. Working a computer is hard and takes a long time to do it. There are programs for artists in the computer area. I try and achieve vibrant colors in my printed material from the computer.

My grandfather was an artist. His name was Jacob Ribaysen; click on link of grandfather's art. (link)
I joined an anti pollution group during Viet Nam and this was a crucial place to be in Chicago as many important issues were discussed there. There were the demonstrations and the anger and frustration of the family for my getting involved in such questionable activities, not to mention the anger of the community which was expressed as a threat more than anything else.

This is when I started to paint. I had always been criticized every time I made art even as a child. I had been told that my grandfather was a respected artist in Poland.

I also do freelance work in graphics and web design.
