A Note On The Relationship Between Patrons And Mortals

Within the island realms of the Nine Kingdoms of Arn, the Divine place significant value on preserving the souls of their faithful, and often act as Patrons to their followers. Many mortals, having firsthand evidence of the Divine’s Presence in the Nine Kingdoms, choose a Patron to follow. Indeed, in many communities, this choice is one of the first acts a child is allowed to perform, though some communities allow more freedom of choice than others, of course.

Ultimately, this divine relationship culminates when the follower dies, and the Patron gathers the soul of their faithful follower shortly after the mortal has passed on. This usually occurs after 1d10 days have passed, usually at the period where the deity would normally restore spells to their clergy (either dawn or dusk.) For the undecided, undeclared, or unclaimed, the Keeper Of The Dead gains all such lost souls after the prerequisite time has passed. Before a Patron lays claim upon a soul, any cleric with the appropriate spells can restore the person to life. Once a Patron claims the mortal’s soul, only the clergy of the deity that claims the soul can affect it.

Most people choose a Patron that their comrades, family and friends would be willing and able to perform a quest for, should they expect to be brought back from the dead. If a mortal decides to change Patrons, they simply need a cleric of the appropriate deity to cast an Atonement spell on them to acknowledge that selection.

When you recover or discover something that nourishes your soul and brings joy,
care enough about yourself to make room for it in your life.
