Zwi's House Rules for AD&D

Here are my house rules for AD&D 2nd Edition. I have used them as a DM, and they are all play-tested. I would like to give credit to Nabi Kartal Toker, my ranger friend, for his creative ideas.

1- When making a parry roll, do not try to hit the attacker's unarmored AC. Instead try to hit his/her active THAC0 minus 10. By saying active THAC0, I mean the THAC0 of the person with that particular weapon [including attack adjustments from strength, specilization etc.]. For example, if you are trying to parry the off-hand dagger +3 of a specialist 9th level fighter with 16 Dex and 17 Str, then you should try to hit armor class -4 [12 (Base THAC0) -1(specilization) -1(Str) -3(Weapon's Plus) +2(Off-hand) -1(Dex Reaction) -10]. For a disarm maneouver, apply a further -4 penalty (or -8 for an expert disarm).

2- This rule can be used in conjunction with the first one, or independently. When you are trying to parry a weapon that is one cathegory larger that you are using, you get -4 to your parry roll. Ex: Parrying a long sword (M-size) with a dagger (S-size). You cannot parry a weapon that is two cathegories larger than your own weapon unless you are a specialist (and even then you get -8 penalty). Ex: Parrying a two-handed sword (L-size) with a short sword (S-size). You may attempt to parry one attack with two (or more) weapons, than you increase the size cathegory of your larger weapon by one (or more). For example, a marilith [who has 6 arms] tries to parry her opponent's great scimitar (L-size) with her two daggers and her short sword (all S-size). There are 2 extra weapons, so the largest weapon is considered two cathegories larger, L-size (S->M->L) and no penalties are applied for the roll. For purposes of parrying, natural weapons are considered the same size as the owner, but if you want you may take them one cathegory larger. Do not forget that spectral opponents cannot be parried.

3- High priests, level 9 or higher, roll their CURE spells twice and take the better result.

4- For priests, use THAC0 advancement as follows: 20-20-19-18-18-17-16-16-15...

5- When a wizard reaches level 9, give him/her the ability to use unlimited amount of cantrips; but don't let them abuse these.

I will update these and add new ones soon. Good gaming,
