MUSIC

To say that music is an important part of my life would be an understatement.

I was practically weaned on Rock n Roll. In 2nd grade, I began taking piano lessons, and taught myself guitar when I was about 14 years old. Today, as a worship leader in my church, I mostly play acoustic guitar. If you're ever in a coffee house here on Long Island, keep a look-out for Bajor -- that's the acoustic band I play in. For further proof that I have a music-psychosis, check out my EdB's Corrections to the Rolling Stone Album Guide

ROCK

Due to the fact that I came of age in the 70's, most of my favorites are from then. Honestly, I don't think they make em like they used to. My guess is that the commercialization of rock music smothered the spark. Anyway...

My top 10 favorite rock albums
(click an album to read a review...)

CSNY - Deja Vu The Who - Who's Next Loggins & Messina - Sittin' In Yes - Close to the Edge Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy
The Beatles - White Album Rush - Signals Rusted Root - When I Woke Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon The Outlaws - The Outlaws

FOLK & CELTIC

Recently, I've turned on to Folk music, much to the encouragement of the best radio station in New York City, WFUV 90.7 FM. They broadcast a Saturday morning traditional Celtic program, "A Thousand Welcomes" hosted by Kathleen Biggins, which is second to none. If you're one of The Unfortunates (i.e., live outside of WFUV's broadcasting range), you can tune in locally to an excellent, syndicated Celtic show, Fiona Ritchie's Thistle and Shamrock.

Here's my favorite Folk and Celtic artists:
FOLK CELTIC
1. Bob Dylan 1. Clannad
2. October Project 2. Altan
3. Nanci Griffith 3. Enya
4. Emmy Lou Harris 4. Patrick Street
5. James McMurtry 5. Cherish the Ladies
6. John Hiatt 6. Dougie MacLean
7. Joni Mitchell 7. Silly Wizard
8. John Gorka 8. The Chieftains
9. 5 Chinese Brothers 9. Capercaillie
10. Jim Messina 10. Iona

CLASSICAL

Growing up with classical piano lessons, I've retained a love for classical music. For some reason, I'm drawn to the music of Russian composers. I'm learning to enjoy opera, too. Here's my favorite classical pieces:

  1. Handel - Water Music
  2. Rachmaninoff - Piano Concerto #2
  3. Mussorgsky - Pictures at an Exhibition
  4. Beethoven - Symphony #7
  5. Mascagni, Pietro - Cavalleria Rusticana
