Welcome to our Flat Stanley Page!

by Mrs. Gaines' Kindergarten class in Seneca, MO

We read the book, Flat Stanley, by Jeff Brown. It is the story of a little boy who ends up rather thin after an incident involving a bulletin board. Of course, Stanley and his family are alarmed at his predicament at first, but later Stanley discovers some unique advantages to his flattened shape.

One particular advantage was that Stanley was able to go visit his friend in California by putting himself in an envelope with a little PB and J. Then he was dropped into a mailbox and mailed to California. That is the adventure that our Flat Stanley project recreates.

Through this project, the children have the opportunity to explore and appreciate literature, build listening comprehension, increase their fine motor skills and learn about different areas of the country.

Each student brought an envelope to school addressed to an out of state relative. The return address was to the student in care of the classroom address. Each student decorated their Stanley and placed him in the envelope. The instructions were for Stanley's hosts to keep him for two weeks and take him around with them to have fun in the state where he was visiting. Hosts were encouraged send back emails, photos, postcards or other items of interest. Hosts were asked to create a "paper doll" outfit to represent the place that Stanley visited or an activity Stanley participated in while on his trip. We opted to do a shortened Flat Stanley project in the hopes that all of the kids would get their Stanleys back.

This webpage was created to share the information that we learned from our Flat Stanleys with other classes in our school and all around the world. If you like our page, please send us email!!! We would love to hear from our Flat Stanley hosts, as well as from other people from all around the world.
