In Musashi's words, the chi chapter is his explanation of the way of thinking, the philosophy of the school. It is that which must be known from the large matter to the small matters, from the shallow matters to the deep matters. In order to lay down the groundwork for a straight path, this first chapter has been named chi.

There's nothing that is easy in this world. This first step of understanding of myself has been an arduous journey. From my sheltered childhood in Taiwan, my fight for self-identity through the hormone filled teenage years in a racially challenged white suburban neighborhood, my balancing of Taiwanese sensibility with American bravado of my dating years (which continues today), to my professional and community work. These are the curvaceous routes that I have traveled that have contributed to my understanding of self and the world.

It is here, the earth chapter which encomposes all the experiences I gathered as I slowly marches toward adult-hood, that I formed my colored lenses, and poured the concrete that formed the foundation of my soul.
