Does acupuncture hurt?
You should feel some sensation when the acupuncturist inserts the needle. Some people will feel tingling or minor discomfort for a short time.

How big are the needles?
They vary in size depending on the area of the body where the needles will be inserted. The smallest needles are hair-thin needles and the largest needles used are only slightly bigger.

Are the needles clean?
All the needles we use are sterilized, disposable needles. Alcohol is used to sterilize the insertion site.

How does acupuncture work?
Acupuncture is a treatment method that uses fine needles to stimulate the body to heal itself. In the Chinese philosophy, the human body has channels through which blood and energy flow. Illness is caused by a blockage in these channels. The needles used in acupuncture are inserted in certain points of the body that help to ease the blockage. Once the blockage is relieved, the symptoms of the illness are soothed.

How are should I choose an acupuncturist?
There are different levels of training for acupuncturists. In the state of Pennsylvania, all acupuncturists must have both national and state licensure. Practitioners can have the following designations, based on their training:
L.Ac. -- Licensed Acupuncturist
R.Ac. Registered Acupuncturist
M.Ac. Masters in Acupuncture
O.M.D. -- Doctor of Oriental Medicine

How many treatments will I need?
This depends on the illness or condition that you have. Many people feel results after one or two treatments. In general acute problems resolve quickly.  Chronic conditions require more time and effort.

How long do treatments last?
Treatments generally last 30 minutes, unless additional therapies are required.
