Limerick F.C. |
Limerick Football Club were founded in 1937, and although the club are currently living in the shadows of past times, there is always a hint of a possible surprise around the club. Coming from the third largest city in Ireland, you would think that there would be more of an interest in the local area than there is. But with the soccer team competing with the sports of hurling and rugby, there is little or no time given by the city to a small club, who haven't won anything of note for an age. You can't help but to get the feeling that a breakthrough is possible, as the market is there for the expansion of soccer in a city where sport plays a mojor role in everyday life. The club, having been founded in 1937, didn't take long to adapt to the pressure of playing against well established teams and made the breakthrough by winning the Munster Senior Cup, defeating Cork in the final. During the 1940's the club began to take strides in the LOI and narrowly missed out on winning the league championship on two occasions, finishing as runners-up. The club did however manage to win silverwear, lifting the Munster Senior Cup for the second time. It was in 1943 when the club changed to blue and white jersies, and during this decade the club gained record attendances and got a strong following in the community. During the 50's the club reached new heights winning the Dublin City Cup and the L.O.I. Shield, record attendance continued to flock to Market's Field and the club regularly got crowds in excess of 10,000 spectators. The 60's saw the rise of Limerick who managed to capataalise on the Dublin City Cup win and lifted the League Championship for the first time the following season, the club also reached two F.A.I. Cup finals, losing both, and reached a further two semi-finals. The seventies saw Limerick win the F.A.I. Cup for the first time and qualify for Europe, playing Real Madrid. They also managed to lift the Dublin City Cup for the third time in their history. The 80's saw the club repeat the success of 1960 when the club won the league championship for the second time, they also managed to win the F.A.I. Cup again and in Europe played the likes of Southampton and Real Madrid again. Recent times haven't been good to Limerick with the club being relegated, however in recent years the whole emphasis of the team has been changed and local youth has been given it's chance, Tommy Lynch has guided the club higher in the league than in recent years and a Play-off place is a real possibility. |
