OUR LOCATION
Mérida, Yucatán, México

Yucatan was discovered by the Spaniards in the 16th century and Merida, was the first cities they founded (1542). The founder was Francisco de Montejo at the site of T'ho, an ancient Maya city and his discovery is VERY evident in our quaint Spanish colonial architecture and hundreds of churches and haciendas. Many of our buildings are 200 years old and housed some of the Spanish elite, and some have been restored into museums, banks and government palaces, all available for view to the public.

SpringBell Spanish school is located on the Yucatan Peninsula in the capital of Merida. In many ways, our city is excellently placed, with close access to the Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico, and Mayan Pyramids. Still our city has kept its culture and has not been converted into a high-tech tourist resort city like Cancun -- and this will give you an opportunity to sit back and relax.

Fiesta Americana Merida

With a population of 1.5 million, Merida is also considered the cleanest city in Mexico. Thus, it has also earned the name of "The White City" because of its clean streets and beautiful white Spanish style buildings. But our most popular feature is our year round sunshine and warm weather, which is great for exploring our miles of white sand beaches.

You will also enjoy the friendly cultural enrichment you will receive. The beauty of Merida is not only contained in its climate and cleanliness, but its friendly people, who are very proud of their city and history. Many will be glad to share with you every aspect of their home, from the famous culture to the daily Yucatecan/Spanish or Mexican cuisine. And a great many traditions and festivities are still held by the Yucatecan people, many of them being mixtures with other cultures as well, such as the Mayans. The Mayan Indians were very much the first people on the peninsula, dating back to 400BC, you can see their culture evident through some festivities, and more well known, their ancient ruins.

All in all, we believe if you choose to come here, not only will you learn Spanish, but many things about our exotic and extravagant way of life as well -- in other words you won't be disappointed.

Transportation to Merida

Merida has a very good location on the Northwestern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula. This makes it an easily reached flight from the Gulf coast of the US. The resorts of Cancun, Cozumel and Isla Mujeres are also in close proximity and have airports that can be reached from the coast as well.

Several major Airlines, such as Continental and AeroMexico have direct or one stop flights to Merida or Cancun from well known US cities (Miami, Houston, Dallas, New York etc). Although it will probably be more cost effective to land in Cancun, (which is 3hrs to the east of Merida) if you choose to land in Merida, advise the school of your exact flight information at least 10 days in advance of arrival, and we will pick you up at the airport free of charge.
