The Outer Banks Kiwanis Club received its Charter on June
28, 1983. Our Charter President was Leo J. Sheetz, for whom
our annual high school scholarship fund is named.
Charter members who are still active are Virgil Lanning,
R. Donald Myers, and John Sheetz, who was our Charter Secretary.
The club has provided one Governor to the Carolinas District,
Leo Sheetz, Sr., from 1987 to 1988 and 1997 to 1998, when
he was a Distinguished Governor of the Carolinas District.
The club has provided one past Lieutenant Governor, Dick
Denton. John Sheetz is serving as Lieutenant Governor currently,
until 2004.
