In 2003 we teamed up with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's
Team in Training and the Friends of Jockey's Ridge to resurrect
the 19-year-old Nags Head Woods 5 Kilometer Trail Run.
Tom Saporito rallied our club members and together with the
Team in Training volunteers we raised more than $40,000 in
cash and in-kind contributions for our Manteo High School
Scholarship Fund, cancer research and state park programs
at Jockey's Ridge. Ed Beckley, the coach of the Outer Banks
Team in Training, was the race director. He immediately joined
our club after experiencing the great teamwork with the Kiwanis.
The club is also involved in a host of other community support
programs, including:
- Hospital Dolls-The club members stuff cloth dolls made
by ladies from one of the local churches. The cloth for
the dolls was donated by Old Towne Window Works of
Fredericksburg, Va. Dolls are donated to Albemarle Hospital
in Elizabeth City, NC, and The Outer Banks Hospital in Nags
Head, NC for distribution to their patients who are children.
- Salvation Army Bell Ringing
- Miles of Smiles Dental Van
- North Carolina Boys & Girls Home
- Ronald McDonald House in Norfolk, VA
- SAFE Program of Dare County Schools
- Flu Shot Assistance of the Dare County Health Department
- Scholarships for Manteo High School Seniors
