This is Tom Aitken's Review of the game, all the opinions are of Tom Aitken and are only his. There are 4 review criteria, Graphics, Gameplay(control,challenge
,ect.), Sound and Music. All the Critieria are rated out of 25%, except Gameplay its out of 50%.
The graphics in Earthbound are very simple for a SNES game, but this is an RPG so thats okay. The overworld looks cool and the characters move in a simple RPG type motion. The battles take place on cool MODE 7 backgrounds, these are very cool. Each PSI attack has a different graphical apearence. Graphics scores a:21% out of 25%
EB's control is as good as you would expect from an RPG, and you can play the game with just your left hand so that you can turn pages or write things down. Challenge is a little lacking, especially if you pump-up your levels, but the game has it's hard parts. There are a few gameplay aspects that I don't like, for instance, your packpack you can't carry very much stuff, although it's kind of realistic, The thing I don't like the most is the fact that your equiped item stays in your backback, for example, your baseball cap is on your head so why would it be in your pack, I just don't get it. Gameplay scores a:44% out of 50%
The sounds in this game are funny, modern and some times rude, they are all very good and fit the game nicely. The music is the best part of the game, the tracks are all very bouncy and happy. Sound and Music scores a:25% out of 25%
Earthbound has to be my fave SNES game, I knew it was going to be a cool game the moment I saw the preview in NP. I've had the game since it first came out and still play it(alot!). If you can't find it in stores then I think you should download it and play it on an emu(you can find the ROM on most ROM sites).
