In 1981, Norway became the first country in the world to enact a law to prevent discrimination against homosexuals. The uniform age of consent was set at 16 for all sexual acts in 1972. The marriage-like registered partnership law was introduced in 1993, based on the Danish law from 1989. All in all, gays in Norway enjoy one of the world's best legal situations with extensive protection against discrimination and abuse.
Although the Norwegian society is quite tolerant towards homosexuals, Oslo is the easiest place to live for most open gays. Along the coastline and fjords of southern Norway, Christian fundamentalism plays a very important role and several local by-laws are in force especially preventing the sale and consumption of alcohol.
The strongest opposition against Norway's relatively liberal laws towards homosexuals comes from the churches, including the Lutheran State Church, and right-wing extremists.
