The story opens with Mayuko, a young student studying for a makeup entrance exam at a cram school in Tokyo. She lives in a shabby apartment above a public bathhouse. In her closet lives NieA, an alien. You see, sometime before the show picks up, aliens have become a facet of daily life for modern Japanese people. In fact, it's revealed that they came to Earth before Mayuko was even born. NieA is a carefree "under" alien, with no ranking in their hierarchy and no interest in politics. She whiles away her days building UFOs out of junk and making Mayuko's life a misery. [ More ]
Yuri Otani who just moved up to the sixth grade was melancholic because she was forced to belong to the post that she never wanted to belong. The name of that post was "Alien countermeasure team". The work of the team was to capture the another world's creatures which fell one after another in their school, and to defeat them. That was dangerous and hard work. They had to attach symbiosis type alien to their head to increase their power. That was unpleasant, and Yuri hated this work. [ More ]
