BATTLE REPORTS - MARINES' GLORY

Marines' Glory

This was supposed to be a small, quick scenario; it was mainly planned to introduce a new faction, VOMIT, to the game, more of which below. It turned out somewhat different, but see for yourself...

The Location:

Soeliland, a village (now, who would have thought that...).

The main road runs through this small village, with an old ruin being positioned where there is a sharp bend in the road. There is a large complex of buildings (house 1) dominating the main crossroads in the village. There is another, rather loose complex of houses (houses 4a to 5b) also of tactical significance.

For some reason or other PLAoSS has taken a great interest in gaining control over the central part of this village. Unfortunately, a DRS Marines platoon is tasked with preventing just that.

And then there is that breakaway faction - one of PLAoSS' most distinguished leaders, Colonel Nububu, had brought his elder brother Nubaba into the militia. Nubaba, however, having a very flamboyant lifestyle and preferring to be called "field marshal" by his followers, was soon at odds with the PLAoSS leader, General Mahmut ("I won't accept orders from that Mahmut scum - he's only a filthy general, but I'm a field marshal!!"). Taking a significant following away, he founded the Volunteer Militia against Imperialism and Tyranny, or VOMIT for short. Upon hearing of the PLAoSS plans for taking the village, he set about preparing an assault as well, determined to prevent any PLAoSS success.

Below you can see the village; PLAoSS was to enter the village from the left, while VOMIT was entering from the lower part of the village.

The Objectives:

The overall objective for both PLAoSS and VOMIT is gaining control over House 1, 5a and 5b. The DRS Marines should make this as uncomfortable for the militias as possible - we thought they were mainly to play the role of a speed bump. How wrong we were...

Each militia enjoyed more than a two to one superiority. Taken together, the DRS Marines were hopelessly outnumbered. Moreover, they did not have any air support. It all looked like either VOMIT or PLAoSS would wipe out the Marines quickly, with a fierce battle then erupting around house 1. Well, it looked like that.

Phase I: Initial moves

PLAoSS and VOMIT made the first moves, slowly entering the village. PLAoSS occupied House 3, which dominated much of the lower part of the village - in the picture below you can't see it but there was a well-placed window giving good arcs of fire until effectively closed by a smoke round.

VOMIT entered the village from its lower part. After occupying some key houses artillery was put on the table (actually outside the picture below) and everything prepared for a big push. The plan was to assault houses 4a and 4b in order to get into 4b in particular as its upper storey dominated the main crossroads; the VOMIT commander already dreamt of having a RPG team and a spotter emplaced up there...

Meanwhile, the DRS Marines had deployed mainly around house 4a and 5a, with secondary positions in house 1 and house 2. There was also a sniper team available that eventually proved to be of great importance.

Phase II: VOMIT attacking

After trading some shots with PLAoSS teams in house 3 and putting smoke in front of the only window there VOMIT prepared for the first main charge against house 4a. In a first wave, a squad tried to get close to house 4a, drawing some ineffectual fire in the process.

And then it happened! The sniper went into action for the first time, killing the squad leader and thereby effectively immobilizing the squad. Undaunted, VOMIT threw another squad at the house - with the same result!

Meanwhile, PLAoSS slowly pushed troops forward into the buildings opposite house 2. Also, PLAoSS mortar fire started to suppress Marines units guarding the main crossroads.

With two VOMIT squads bogged down in front of houses 4a and 4b, a bloody battle was about to begin, with grenades flying all around. Although VOMIT managed to cause some casualties, it was at a distinct disadvantage as according to our rules, green troops have to make a throw deciding whether the grenade explodes in their own hands.

... alas, unsuccessfully!
VOMIT trying to get into House 4a ...

And guess what? It was exactly that what happened repeatedly - after some rather tense action the VOMIT attack was beaten back for good, with a number of VOMIT rifle teams suppressed and out in the open. Without the PLAoSS threat, the DRS Marines would probably have carried the day there and then. Fortunately PLAoSS was now starting to move in earnest as well.

Phase III: PLAoSS sweeps the ground

PLAoSS began its offensive with occupying house 2; from the ground floor RPG teams knocked out the DRS M-47, while the M-113 fell to a tank grenade. From house 2 PLAoSS infantry cleared the crossroads, allowing its tanks to prepare for forcing the barricade.

Meanwhile, VOMIT decided to commit its remaining assets in a push on the left flank; aimed mainly at the bunker (which turned out to be unoccupied) and house 4b, this move was planned to prevent PLAoSS from getting at the key positions around house 1.

Again, however, the sniper struck! Another two squads of VOMIT infantry were bogged down in front of the bunker, without any field of fire. As repeated throws failed to disclose the sniper, VOMIT was more or less stalled. Meanwhile, PLAoSS began to assault house 1 and clearing the upper storeys of their occupants.

With infantry firmly emplaced in house 1, PLAoSS started to move its tanks forward. More infantry was moved forward to prepare for the next push towards houses 5a and 5b.

After successfully forcing the barricade, PLAoSS placed a T-55 squarely into the main part of the village; together with the tank infantry moved forward started to clear house 5a of its occupants.

At the same time, house 5b drew fire from another tank as well as from the PLAoSS infantry now well emplaced in house 1. Fortunately for the DRS Marines, the house was empty.

Phase IV: Marines' Glory

With more than half of the village now under PLAoSS control, the PLAoSS commander now began to prepare for assaulting the VOMIT forces and tried to remove the remnants of the DRS Marines from the table. The situation for the DRS commander was now far from enviable - he had already suffered critical losses, and only through sheer luck had his HQ managed to escape from the hail of fire that was poured into house 5a. Sooner or later PLAoSS would be able to move one or two tanks close to house 4a.

A good plan was needed; unfortunately, the DRS commander is not exactly famous for coming up with good plans...

Meanwhile, the VOMIT commander was trying to get piece his effort back together. Unfortunately, with the sniper still undetected, VOMIT had effectively only one asset capable of moving around freely - the sole tank.

PLAoSS preparing to assault VOMIT ...
... with spectacular success!!

With everything else going well for PLAoSS, an attack on VOMIT was inevitable, particularly as much of VOMIT's infantry was bogged down and incapable of doing anything coordinated. With inferior forces PLAoSS managed to wipe out most of VOMIT's forces between house 4b and the bunker.

... but fails to knock out PLAoSS T-55.

In an attempt at finally breaking through towards the main part of the village, the VOMIT tank valiantly pushed forward, managed not to be hit by the T-55 (itself no mean achievement giving the distance involved) but failed to knock out its opponent. Instead, the only surviving Marines bazooka team dashed out of house 4a, aimed, let off a shot and dashed back inside again. Fortunately for VOMIT, the shot failed to make a lasting impression...

Meanwhile, PLAoSS tried to close assault House 4a. Although this first attempt failed, the DRS commander finally decided that the position was too unsafe; as a consequence, he rallied his remaining troops and attacked the VOMIT troops outside house 4a. Although vastly outnumbered, the fact that most of his opponents were suppressed tilted the balance - and he succeeded in fighting his way out of house 4a.

The heroes of the game: DRS Marines HQ, two squad leaders, one rifle team, one bazooka team

With most of the VOMIT forces outside house 4a and 4b eliminated, the DRS commander then made a daring (not that surprising) and very clever (highly surprising!) move and occupied the central cluster of buildings in the lower part of the village. From there, the Marines started to pick out everything in sight, causing considerable casualties. The VOMIT commander then decided to retreat, thereby ending the game.

So, what can be said about the game?

Summing up the game is easy - VOMIT lost, PLAoSS won and the DRS got all the brownie points for heroic action. Although the VOMIT commander in particular was soundly beaten, it was really good fun for all, mainly because it went not at all as planned. If the game taught us one thing it was that snipers can really cause trouble - without the sniper team, VOMIT may well have succeeded in breaking through.
