Elderberry Cottage
Surrounded by a garden of creeping
phlox, purple
salvia, foxgloves, morning glories, and roses sits
Elderberry Cottage--secure in this
place where
flowers bloom in joyful disarray. The butterflies
are playing tag, and our faerie guide has touched
us with her
stardust. A shady path leads past a cast-iron
faerie which
stands sentry at the pale yellow door of a miniature
pink
cottage, which serves as a potting shed and a respit for
afternoon tea. Complete with a small spiderweb window and
decorated
with tiny running rabbits, visitors are enticed by
the potting
shed's magic. Here are kept the tools to work the
garden.
Opening the door, we are greated by a warm
sun-dappled room and our table set for afternoon tea.
The air is fragrant with potpourri in small wooden bowls.
The
mixture of cedar chips, tansy, southernwood,
rosemary, and other
sweet-smelling herbs also serves as a repellent to
uninvited insects.
As we sip our tea, we become aware of drying sprigs of
lavender and heather tucked
between roses which seem to be
sleeping on the work bench. Wind chimes tinkle. Favorite
hats and
gloves await their
time in the high Scottish sun.
Suddenly, the closed door swings open, and a gentle
breeze
beckons us to be on our way. Stepping on the small
cobblestone
steps, gold dust begins to sparkle and dance beneath
our toes,
and we are reminded that our visit will be like none
other--ever.
