Sipho Mokwena
Sipho Mokwena's (b 1960) art has to do with the interpretation of social life on various levels, finding its rationale in the fascinating way in which people endeavour to assert themselves and justify their existence. It is important to allow your subconscious free rein in this respect. Artistic expression is a celebration of humankind's creative facilities. It ensures its foothold in the abyss of life and transforms experience into a new reality. |
Mainly self taught. Participated in various cultural events while in exile in Angola and ANC camps between 1982 - 1985 and continued practicing art while in prison between 1988 and 1991 (arrested as an MK operative)
1989 - New York, an exhibition of pencil sketches arranged
by Sipho's attorney, July Mohamed, while in prison.
