The Dasart Colonial Mutations
project was conceived as the juxtaposition of early 20th mindset, symbolized by Victorian
Art, with late 20th century Dasart mindset. This contrasted idealistic notions of progress
and Christianity with the harsh realities of ozone holes and deforestation brought about
by the Capitalist forces unleashed. The first installation took place at the Tatham Art Gallery (Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa) in June 1995; and was titled Dasart/Victoria I. Later, in April 1996 Dasart/Victoria II : Colonial Mutations was installed at the Durban Art Gallery (Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa). This installation included new works as the concept was evolving. The final showing of this installation was at the Oliewenhuis Art Museum (Bloemfontein, Free State, South Africa) in June 1996 where it was titled Dasart Colonial Mutations. The artists that participated in this touring installation were Ashley Johnson, Michael Matthews, Dave Andrew and Mike Moloney. Photographs of some of their individual works (as opposed to installation views) are shown below. |
