Dear Friend

“Don’t be afraid to use this thing.” Howie smiled, tapping the cellular phone he had just purchased for Chemelyn. “I want to be able to hear your sweet voice - no matter where you are.”

“Yeah, well, the same goes for you mister.” she returned his smile sadly. Howie sighed and tipped her chin up with his fingertip, forcing her eyes to his.

“I’ll call. Repeatedly. Until you get sick of my voice and messages on your answering machine. I’ll also write, fax, email, telegraph, send a message in morse code-”

“Alright! Alright....” Chemelyn laughed. Howie grinned, then turned serious.

“I love you.”

“I love you.” Chemelyn leaned into him, resting her head on his chest. Howie let his carry on bag drop from his shoulder to the floor, easing his arms around her waist, pulling her so close, there wasn’t any space left between them.

“I’m going take time off from the tour to come and visit you.” he stated softly.

“What will the other guys think? And your management. And your record label. I’m assuming they’re involved with your tour too, aren’t they?”

“Yes.” Howie smiled into her hair, loving her innocence regarding the music business. When he had revealed his primary career to her the evening before, she had shrugged and said it didn’t matter. Howie had been nonplussed, then extremely thankful. She had said with honesty, “You’re still you. And that’s who I love.”

Now, as they stood in the airport waiting for Howie’s flight call, he didn’t ever want to let go. He doubted she did either. Chemelyn was trying to be brave, so brave. She had yet to shed any tears, though she had come close that morning when she had come with him to his hotel to pack.

Howie had spent the night at Chemelyn’s apartment, unwilling to be away from her for their last few hours. They had slept in her bed together, holding one another all night long. He had not made love to her, knowing that he wanted to be able to wake up next to her, and make love all over again the following morning. For now, he had the remembrance of her touch, her scent, her laughter, to keep him warm at night.

“Flight 118 to Florida, now boarding at gate 12.”

Chemelyn hugged him tighter, taking a deep breath. Howie returned her fierce embrace. Finally, she pulled away.

“I guess this is it.” she whispered.

“Yeah, it is.” he sighed. Their eyes devoured one another, each making an attempt to etch the other’s face into memory. Howie captured her lips with his own. The kiss was fiery, fueled by passion and the need to remember. Their mouths melded for several moments, each kissing the other as though it would be their last. Indeed it was. For a time.

When they broke away, Chemelyn had tears in her eyes. A single drop coursed a path down her cheek. Tenderly, Howie leaned forward and stopped the tear with a soft kiss. He pulled away and licked his lips, tasting the salt.

“Bittersweet....” he murmured. Chemelyn swallowed with difficulty. Painstakingly, Howie pulled from her embrace, and bent to pick his bag up off the floor.

Taking a deep breath, Chemelyn opened her mouth. “Goodb-”

“No. No goodbyes.” Howie interrupted, placing a finger to her lips. Chemelyn nodded, and braced herself as Howie gently pressed one last feather light kiss to her mouth. “Think of me whenever it rains.” he whispered, then backed reluctantly away, not wanting to take his eyes off of her. Absently, he handed the stewardess his ticket. Howie raised a hand in the air, then placed it over his heart. Chemelyn echoed his movments, her hand balling into a fist over her chest. Howie nodded, and formed his hand into a fist as well. “I love you.” he mouthed before turning, and disappearing into the flight terminal.

“I love you.” Chemelyn whispered. Outside, it began to rain.
