Thomas Bulfinch

Bulfinch's Mythology: Includes The Age of Fable, The Age of Chivalry, and Legends of Charlemagne - For almost a century and a half, Bulfinch's Mythology has been the text by which the great tales of the gods and goddesses, Greek and Roman antiquity; Scandinavian, Celtic, and Oriental fables and myths; and the age of chivalry have been known.  The tales are eminently readable.  As Bulfinch wrote, "without a knowledge of mythology much of the elegant literature of our own language cannot be understood and appreciated.... Our book is an attempt to solve this problem, by telling the stories of mythology in such a manner as to make them a source of amusement"

Earnest A. Wallis Budge

Egyptian Religion: Ideas of the Afterlife in Ancient Egypt - In Egyptian Religion, Sir E. A. Wallis Budge, who was Keeper of Egyptian and Assyrian Antiquities at the British Museum in the  late 19th and early 20th centuries, delves deeply and insightfully into ancient Egypt.
Egyptian Book of the Dead - The Book of the Dead is a great collection of texts that the ancient Egyptian scribes composed for the benefit of the dead -- spells and incantations, hymns and litanies, magical formulae and names, words of power and prayers, cut or painted on walls of pyramids and tombs, and painted on coffins and sarcophagi and rolls of papari.
The Mummy - In The Mummy Earnest A. Wallis Budge gives an account of the history of ancient Egypt and describes the techniques used in mummification and the rituals and artifacts associated with this funeral rite. ... This fascinating volume will interest anyone wishing to understand not only the process of mummification but also the cultural background of a ritual upon which an entire civilization was built.

Joseph Campbell

Myths to Live By - What is a properly functioning mythology and what are its functions? Can we 'life by' myths today?  Can they help relieve our modern anxiety, or do they help to foster it?  in Myths to Live By, Joseph Campbell explores the vital link of man to his myths and the way in which they can extend our human potential.

James Cowan

Mysteries of the Dreamtime: The Supernatural Life of the Australian Aborigine - For centuries, the mysterious spiritual life of Aboriginal Australians has lain concealed behind a veil of misunderstanding and prejudice. Whether making a Dream Journey in search of his ancestral roots, or painting his body in order to recreate his culture heroes, the Aborigine partakes of an intense spiritual reality that can only be expressed through a complex calendar of ritual and ceremony.

Sir James Frazier

The New Golden Bough -out of print - A pioneer study in magic and religion that links the primitive concepts and modes of thought to the many institutions and fold customs they underlie, The Golden Bough was a milestone in the interpretation of man's cultural past.  No other work in the field of anthropology contributed so much to the mental and artistic climate of our times -- what Freud did for the individual, Frazer did for civilization as a whole.  Tracing the evolution of human behavior from the savage to the civilized through his studies of magic, taboos, sexual practices, superstition, and wizardry, and locating from these the basis and roots of contemporary social, scientific, and religious ideas, Frazer built a magnificent behavioral bridge from the past to the present.

Brian Froud

Faeries - explores a whole world of magic charged with the wild beauty of creatures who do not live by human rules.  Theirs is a realm of wonder, exquisite delight, and enchanted danger.  The two gifted artists who created this book, have made a study of the history of Faerie. Going to old sources they examined the myths and legends, sorted fact from fancy, and, finally, illuminated their findings with nearly two hundred extraordinary drawings and full color paintings. Rarely have research and artistry combined to produce so beautiful a result.
Good Faeries Bad Faeries - In the long-awaited sequel to Faeries, artist Brian Froud rescues pixies, gnomes, and other faeries from the isolation of the nursery and the distance of history, bringing them into the present day with vitality and imagination. In this richly imagined new book, Brian reveals the secrets he has learned from the faeries - what their noses and shoes look like, what mischief and what gentle assistance they can give, what their souls and their dreams are like.  As it turns out, faeries aren't all sweetness and light. In addition to such good faeries ad Dream Weavers and Faery Godmothers, Brian introduces us to a host of less well behaved creatures - traditional bad faeries like Morgana le Fay, but also the Soul Shrinker and the Gloominous Doom. The Faery kingdom, we find, is a subject to good and evil as the human realm.

Norma Lorre Goodrich

Michael Grant & John Hazel

Who's Who Classical Mythology - The Who's Who in Classical Mythology is the most complete and detailed reference book of its kind. It offers scholarly accounts of all those half-remembered mythological tales surrounding fantastic gods such as Apollo, Zeus, Athena and Dionysus, and mortals such as Achilles, Odysseus, Jason, Aeneas, Romulus and Remus, and Tarquin.

Joseph Jacobs

Celtic Fairy Tales - This enchanting selection of stories has been culled from two volumes of Celtic Fairy Tales collected by Joseph Jacobs in 1892. Many of these Irish tales have been passed by word of mouth alone from one generation to the next for hundreds of years. And all the color, magic and charm of Celtic folklore is portrayed here in simple language which will delight young and old alike.

J.A. MacCullouch

The Religion of the Ancient Celts -out of print - J.A. MacCulloch's classic text attempts to summon the dead Celtic religion and reconstruct the faith according to the evidence that remains. There is little written material available - manuscripts from the eleventh and twelfth centuries, and the Maginogion document from Wales. For more clues we have to turn to fold-custom, which preserved so much of the ancient cult, folk-tales, burial-mounds and other relics. The Celt was a seeker after God, eager to conquer the unknown by religious rite or magic art. Celts were born dreamers and much that is spiritual and romantic in more than one European literature is due to them.

Caitlin & John Matthews

Encyclopedia of Celtic Wisdom: The Celtic Shaman's Sourcebook - The Celtic tradition is a source of inspiration to many of us seeking to discover our ancestral spiritual heritage. Yet so many primary Celtic texts, themselves rich in ancient wisdom, have been buried away from us for generations. Now, this superb new sourcebook offers all who are following the way of the Celtic tradition a unique opportunity to draw upon a deep, and hitherto unavailable, well of ancestral knowledge.
From Isles of Dream: Visionary Stories & Poems of the Celtic Renaissance - From time immemorial, Celtic bards and prophets maintained "perpetual choirs of song" to preserve and enhance the sacred order of the universe. Trained to utter the enchantments of the other world and maintain the song lines of the land with sacred story, they gave rise to a living spiritual vision in which this world and that - Gods and Goddesses, heroes and spirits - coexisted in a magical reality.

M.V. Seton-Williams

Egyptian Legends and Stories -out of print - From ancient times, the Land of Egypt has been the source of many forms of literature: hymns, songs, poems, prayers, plays, stories and maxims. These were recorded by the priests and scribes and the purpose of this book is to present to the reader translations of some of these ancient and obscure texts in a readable form. The stories selected date from the early Pharaonic period to medieval times and because the Egyptians were a religious people, the majority of them are based on religious themes, with good triumphing over evil. Many of the stories are precursors of those familiar to us, such as the creation myth of the Memphite Theology, which predates the New Testament by many centuries.
