Thirteen time District III Region II A Champs (eleven Consecutive '92-2003 and again in 2007 and 2008. District Runners Up 2003/04,2004/05 and 2005/06.

The Lady Wolverines are the only high school basketball team in Alaska to date to have won 5 consecutive State Championships, in any division or gender!!! They have a state best 98 game winning streak as well.



Coach Dan Leman has retired and we would like to welcome new coach Rod Van Saun!! Here is an abbreviated list of Coach Leman and Lady Wolverine accomplishments over the years:


  • 1991/92: Made it to State and got 5th.

  • 1992/93: Region Champs & 3rd at State

  • 1993/94: Region Champs & 3rd at State; Dan receives his first Small Schools Coach of the Year award

  • 1994/95: Region Champs & State Runners Up

  • 1995/96: Region Champs & 2A State Champs (undefeated); Dan is named Small Schools Coach of the Year for the 2nd time; Mandi Bock is named Small Schools Player of the Year

  • 1996/97: Region Champs & 2A State Champs (undefeated); Dan is named Small Schools Coach of the Year for the 3rd time; Trish Nobles is Small Schools Player of the Year

  • 1997/98: Region Champs & 3rd at State; Dan is in "Who's Who of American Teachers"; Corrie Lindeman is Small Schools Player of the Year.

  • 1999: Region Champs & State Runners Up

  • '99/2000: Region Champs & 2A State Champs; Dan is named ASAA's Region II Coach of the Year; Theresa Chihuly is Small Schools Player of the Year

  • 2000/2001: Region Champs for 9th consecutive year & State Champs for 4th time in past 6 years. Whitney Leman is named Region MVP. Dan is named Coach of the Year (his 4th). Whitney is named Small Schools Player of the Year

  • 2001/02: Region Champs for 10th consecutive year. Whitney Leman is Region MVP. State Champs in a 3 PEAT - first girl's 2A team to accomplish this in Alaska. They're now 5 time State Champions which makes them the winningest 2A girl's team in the history of 2A basketball. Dan is selected Small Schools Girls Coach of the Year for the 5th time. Whitney is named Small Schools Female Player of the Year for the second year in a row which is also a first in 2A Girls Basketball!! Dan is nominated for "Who's Who of American Teachers" for the second time

  • 2002/03: Region Champs for the 11th consecutive year. Whitney is Region MVP. State Champs in a 4 PEAT, making history yet again. They now have 6 State titles under their belt and are on their 2nd state best winning streak. Dan is selected as Coach of the year for the 6th time and Whitney is named Small Schools Player of the Year for her 3rd consecutive year, the first Alaskan high school female to accomplish this in 2A basketball.

  • 2003/04: Is presented with a Golden Apple award by the School Board for outstanding community and school leadership and service. Region Runners Up and State Champs for the 5th consecutive year, making history (again). They are the first high school team in Alaska, in any division or gender, to win 5 consecutive State Championships. Dan is Small Schools Coach of the Year and Amanda Matson is Small Schools Player of the Year, making this Dan's 7th Small Schools Coach of the Year award and the 8th time a Ninilchik girl has been selected as Player of the Year

  • 2004/05: Region Runners Up and State Runners Up. Dan is named ASAA's Region II Coach of the Year - his 2nd Region Coach award. Note: Jerry Bitner was awarded a plaque for Coach of the Year at the Region Tourney by coaches present at the tourney. He retired this year after coaching the Lumen Christian girls for a long time. We'll miss him. Tim Helvey was later named Small Schools Coach of the Year for Small Schools after beating Ninilchik in the State 2A championship game.

  • 2005/06: Region Runners Up and State Champs. Kendra Moerlein Region MVP and State Player of the Year. Krista Leman Player of the Game first two games @ state. Kendra and Krista earned Region and State All Tourney and All Conference honors. Krista was First Team All State.


  • 2006/07: Region Champions. Krista Leman Region III MVP. Region III All Conference: Krista Leman and Kayleigh Rice. Region III All Tourney: Kayleigh & Kjersten Skjold. Region III All Academic: Kjersten. At the State Tournament, Ninilchik got 3rd this year, losing their semi-final game to eventual champs Yakatut by just two points. Krista and Kayleigh were selected for the All Tournament Team. Tera Schnabl and Kayleigh were selected for the All Sports Team. Krista got Player of the Game against both Selawik and Galena and Kayleigh got Player of the Game against Yakutat. Our girls brought home the Sportsmanship Trophy. Krista was also selected for First Team All State and Kayleigh was an honorable mention.


  • 2007/08: Region Champions. Heidi Skjold Region III MVP. Region III All Conference: Grace Ehlers, Lindsey Rohr and Heidi Skjold. All Tourney: Lindsey Rohr and Grace Ehlers. All Academic: Heidi, Grace and Tera. At the State Tourney, our girls beat Northway and Point Hope to advance to the State title game against the defending champions, the Yakutat Eagles. In a very low scoring game, a testament to the defense, Ninilchik lost 20-32. Ashley Bartolowits and Grace Ehlers made All Tourney Team.


  • 2008/09: Dan had knee surgery November 17th and began the season, but had to make the tough decision to retire due to hip problems which will require more surgery. We would like to welcome Rod Van Saun as new head coach. Please stay tuned to this website as I will continue to maintain it for the Lady Wolverines. We wish Rod and the team continued success. Dan will be missed - words cannot accurately express what he has done for this school and community and how he has positively affected the lives of so many young women. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.



  • A little history: Ninilchik owns two state best longest winning streaks; the first one a 57 game winning streak that stretched for more than two seasons beginning at the end of the '95 season and going to the beginning of the '98 season. They just had their second streak (98 games) broken in the District championship game against Bristol Bay Angels; however, they avenged themselves at the State Tournament, where they beat Point Hope and Skagway and finally, Bristol Bay for the win.

    Girls Who Have Gone On To Play College Ball


    Whitney Leman, former Lady Wolverine was the first 1A/2A girl to be named "Player of the Year" for 3 consecutive years. She was featured in Sports Illustrated "Faces in the Crowd" in the May 3rd, 2003 issue. Go HERE !!!


    Whitney was a guard for the Division II Lady Seawolves, University of Alaska, Anchorage in 2003/2004. In her first Great Alaska Shootout game against Division I Mt. Saint Mary's, she was named Player of the Game. She played two years (2006 and 2007) for the Eastern Oregon University Mountaineers, helping them to Nationals both years. Whitney received an Honorable Mention for the All Conference Team in 2007 and broke EOU's single game assist record with 14. She ended her regular season ranked 1st in the Cascade Collegiate Conference in assists, 3rd nationally in assist/turnover ratio and 5th nationally in assists. In her final and senior year, selected co-captain of the team, she ruptured her achilles tendon prior to the regular season which ended her career. She continued to travel with and support the team.     Theresa Chihuly played ball for University of Alaska Fairbanks in 2000 and 2001



    Tasha Leman played NAIA Div. III ball for the SWOCC (Southwestern Oregon Community College) Lakers in 2001



    Amanda Matson, 2004's 1A/2A Player of the Year, played for Eastern Oregon University in La Grande, OR for four years and earned All American Honors her last two years. Go here for more.



    Krista Leman, youngest daughter of Coach Dan Leman, graduated from high school in 2007. In 2007 she earned MVP honors at Districts, was 2nd highest scorer at the State Tournament, received Player of the Game honors for two games there, and was selected for First Team All State, All Tournament Team and All Conference Team. She was a redshirt for the UAA Lady Seawolves her freshman year of college and decided not to continue in basketball so she could concentrate on her studies and area of interest - journalism.
