Burford, in the Cotswolds

After getting our feet on the ground at Heathrow, our first stop was Burford (en route to Cheltenham).  Burford is a pretty Cotswold town built on a hillside, with an array of interesting old buildings crowded together on the steep High Street.  A bridge crosses the River Windrush at the bottom of the village.  Here's a picture of the lovely river and the churchyard on the opposite bank, with forsythia and daffodils glowing against the old stone and omnipresent greenness.

the churchyard, with daffodils and
forsythia, is on the opposite bank.

We walked around, got the sense that "This is England!," watched the ducks on the river, admired the buildings, and had lunch at a nice tearoom.  Sadly, Burford's High Street is a main route for cars and plenty of trucks getting through the area, and the noise and the exhaust fumes do detract a little from enjoyment of the town, but it's still a nice place for a short stop.   It also tends to be a bit touristy, but with good reason -- the architecture and the natural surroundings combine to make one very pretty place.
