Adelboden

This photo is of LT Mears with his camera on a roof in Adelboden, Switzerland, the town where he spent part of his internment. Adelboden was an isolated village in the Alps south of Bern, a summer resort that was largely empty because of the war. The airmen sometimes went into town to eat at the Swiss restaurants, where the cooks would serve eggs covered with spaghetti to disguise their violation of the rationing laws. At this point the officers and enlisted were still in the same town, although they were segregated by the hotels where they were staying. They were moved directly to Adelboden after their quarantine, and stayed in an area called Camp Maloney. The camp was named after Sgt. Joseph Maloney, a ball turret gunner on a B-17 that crashed in Lake Constance, making him the first airman to die in Switzerland.
