The bugs are also known as Gumtree Bugs. The bug adults are dark brown/black in colour with light brown on the legs and antennae. The bug has yellow and brown colour on the wing covers and a short spine on each shoulder. Nymphs are more colourful, yellow pink in colour with bright blue patterns.

nymph, length 20mm

Colourful bug nymph, found on 23 March 01 in Wishart bushland. We want to find out what bug it is so we bring it home. Few days later, after the last molting, it turn into a dark brown adult bug (second picture). They feed on gum tree, suck sap on the leaf and young shooting.

When disturbed, they will produce smelly fluid as defence. Most predators will avoid them. This could be why we can find some other bugs mimic their adults colour.

We saw once this bug was get caught by the Large Brown Ants. We have recorded here.
