General Care for your Bird

Whether you own a bird for a pet or you are a breeder, general care for your bird remains the same.

FOOD & WATER

The idiom "eats like a bird" is a commonly mistaken myth.  Your bird will need fresh seed daily as they do eat a lot.  Cockatiel seed is the most common choice for parrotlets.  For a happy, healthy pet, a supplement of mixed vegetables (frozen or fresh) and fresh fruit is recommended.  Millet spray is a good thing to have in the cage as well.  Cuttlebone or a mineral block is also an essential item.

Always make sure your parrotlet has fresh, clean water.  Many birds like to take baths in water, so if you only have 1 water source in the cage, you may need to change it daily.

CAGE

Cages should be about 18"x18"x24" to keep your bird comfortable.  Breeders often use slightly smaller cages.  You should note that parrotlets are extremely clever and you may need to use clips on the doors to keep them from escaping!

The cage should be cleaned on a regular basis. Letting it go for too long can lead to diseases and insect infestations.   Newspaper or corn cob litter can be used for tray linings.  (Shavings are too light and are blown out as soon a bird flaps its wings.

TOYS & PLAY

Parrotlets love toys! These birds have decided personalities and are very playful. Balls with bells, ropes and swings are all great playthings to have in your bird's home.  And if they are a pet, be sure to talk to them and play with them for at least a few minutes every day.

CLIPPING

Your bird's nails may need to be clipped on a regular basis, depending on their level of activity.  Most local pet shops offer nail clipping services or can show you how to do it yourself.

If you wish, you can clip your parrotlet's wings.  Note that they are strong birds, and even when clipped will fly short distances at a low altitude.  Again, most local pet stores will offer wing clipping services or show you how to do it yourself.
