Kessa's Candidacy

Kessa yawned as she awoke, momentarily disoriented.  She lay back on the bed and reflected where she was and why.  The 'where' was easy, but the 'why' was much harder.

Where?  At Dragon Soul Weyr, in her own weyr.  Why?  As a Candidate.  To possibly Impress a dragon.  To possibly become a rider, maybe even a goldrider...

Shaking her head, Kessa slid out of bed and changed from her sleeping shift into her work dress.  The Headwoman had said that she would need it, and Kessa wasn't about to waste her best gather dress, the red and yellow one that she adored.  As a matter of fact, it was really her only gather dress, and all of the rest were work dresses.

Finished dressing, Kessa then pulled out a runner's-tail brush and began to brush her hair with it, pulling out a few tangles with her fingers.  With a moment's hesitation, she passed up the bright red ribbon that she usually pulled her hair back in, and opted for a thin leather thong.

Braiding her hair into a runner's tail, Kessa tied it at the back with the thong and headed down towards the Weyrhall, where she would hopefully get something to eat.  "I am so hungry," She moaned to herself as she sat down at the breakfast table.

"'Ere," one of the Candidates said, and offered her a bowl of porridge with a little bit of redfruit on top of it.  "Eat up!"

"Thanks," Kessa replied, and looked up only whenever one of the Candidates came busting in from the weyrbowl, and ran over to the table.

"The Weyrlingmaster said that I could keep 'em!" The boy said happily, and although the rest of the Candidates cheered, Kessa looked on in wonder.  "I found a clutch of firelizard eggs out along the coast," He explaied at Kessa's puzzled look.  "By the looks of it, there'll be enough for all of us to have two or three apiece.  I claim two of the bigger ones, and I give out all of them to whom I feel deserves the bigger eggs!"

And so the distribution of the firelizard eggs began later that day in the LowerCaverns.  Kessa found herself as one of the lucky ones with three eggs, although they were smaller than the rest of the ones in the clutch.  "Ah, well," Kessa sighed to herself as she gazed at the three firelizard eggs.  "Three greens would be just as annoying as three bronzes, if not less."

She found out later that day, though, that she wasn't going to have three greens, and she'd been pretty far off the mark when she assumed that.

All of the eggs had been kept in seperate pots of sand in front of the oven in the LowerCaverns, all in front of the stove.  So it was no surprise that several of the Candidates were squabbling over which pot was their's, for there was indeed no way to tell.

Kessa therefore had no trouble taking the pot with the smallest eggs- no one wanted them anyway.  As the other Candidates began to hurriedly stuff bits of meat into hatching firelizards' mouths, Kessa sat patiently and waited for her three to hatch.

Her first egg split, not surprisingly, into a green firelizard.  For a moment Kessa was tranfixed; a tiny little miniature of a dragon turning to her for food...  However, as the firelizard began to cry out hungrily she was brought back to reality and began to feed the little forst-green dragonet bits of meat that another of the Candidates gave her.

The second egg hatched just as Kessa had gotten the little green full enough to fall asleep.  She was very pleased to see a patch of blue hide, and hastily fed the hatching firelizard.  He gulped it down with vigor, not stopping until several minutes after Kessa began to feed him.

It was because of the topaz-blue that Kessa didn't notice her next firelizard's strange color.  She was too busy shoving food down the blue's throat that the last, smallest little firelizard got only bits of occasionaly meat.  Of course, that was only until the topaz drifted slowly off to sleep, his belly so full that it looked like his hide would split.

Then and only then did Kessa see that her little, last firelizard was a white.  There were cries from an older female Candidate whenever her eggs split to reveal a gold and a bronze, and many of the younger ones seemed just as happy with their blues and greens as the older ones were with their bronzes and browns.

It took a while before anyone noticed Kessa's white, and after that it took her quite a few minutes to fight her way up to her weyr, where she collapsed into bed, the green Xera curled up around her head, the blue Crisal wound around her neck, and the tiny white Illia curled up in a ball next to her side.
