History is fascinating....really, it is.

Many hs families have a favorite subject---ours is history. We believe that understanding salvation history is essential in helping the children develop a relationship with God and this is most easily done by studying history chronologically using interesting material.

In our corner we describe our philosophy on using books that were printed before 1920 whenever possible. History books written before that time period were usually not concerned about being politcally correct and, for the most part, were accurate in thier presentation of history. We keep in mind that many books written by Protestants will be prejudiced against Catholics, but surprisingly many also paint an attractive picture of Catholics. A source of living history out of print books is very useful when hunting used book shops or library shelves. We use several of the Catholic history textbooks as a framework in teaching history and pulling in the Catholic perspective. It's our experience that using these books alone make history appear boring and something that the child cannot relate to or remember.

Of course it is not necessary to use these older books for teaching history. There are many exciting, living books that are still in print. Greenleaf Press (a Protestant Co. which does sell a few books with that bias)publishes a catalog with listings of living books which can be used for teaching history chronologically. Beware! Do not use their "Famous Men of the Reformation" which contains much that is anti Catholic and be cautious of any books which cover time periods after the reformation. We use anti-Catholic biases in books to reinforce what we believe and to point out errors in thinking and faith. However, as much as possible we choose books that have a pro-Catholic sentiment.

Another company whose catalog focuses on living historical books and whose catalog contains extensive descriptions of the books is Elija Co.

When time permits I will be uploading material that is "Catholic friendly". The chronological outline that we use is below. We add activities to the readings from Fantastic History Site and other sources:

"Nothing is more dangerous to the survival of a free Western society than the increasing neglect of history in our teaching and our interests. Dictators always attempt to distort or abolish history. Nowhere has the rewriting and the manipulation of history been more avidly pursued than in Soviet Russia. In our free society we are abolishing the past, not by rewriting it or forcefully suppressing it but simply by losing all interest in it. This is as latal for a society as it is for a man to lose his memory" Barbara Ward

Chronological Outline

Grade K & 1 Read-a-louds from a Catholic Children's Bible
2nd Grade Old Testament History (Egypt & Sumeria) with read-a-louds from an adult Bible and the Catholic CHILD'S BIBLE HISTORY
3rd Grade Ancient Rome and Ancient Greece with read-a-louds from H.A. Guerber's "The Story of Greece" and "The Story of Rome". My oldest read the Greenleaf "Famous Men" series, but Guerber is easier to follow and more well written. It is out of print but worth the Search There are many living books in print that can be found using various lists. Two favorites were "The Golden Goblet" and "The Bronze Bow".
4th Grade Middle Ages, Reformation & Renaissance using Guerber's "The Story of England", "The Story of France" and "The Tragedy of the Reformation" by Bob and Penny Lord for read-a-louds. We use historical fiction, secular and Catholic biographies (including the reprinted Vision and Windett saint's books) for silent reading.
5th Grade1500-1776 using Land of Our Lady or other US Catholic textbooks for a framework and secular & saint biographies along with historical fiction for silent reading.
6th Grade1776-2000 using one of the US Catholic textbooks for a framework and saint & secular biographies and historical fiction for silent reading.
7th Grade is a review of world history using The Story of the Church and Christ the King-Lord of History along with historical fiction and biographies.

LINKS BY CHRONOLOGY

The majority of these links are to the pages of other educators. While I have scanned the pages for blatant anti-Catholic content I can not predict what material the pages may contain in the future. Please let me know if you find bad links. When planning my children's curriculum I highlight and paste lesson plans into my wordprocessor. Later I read through the material keeping the parts of plans or projects that I hope to use.
