LEONARD ROSENMAN: THE COMPOSER

Place of Birth: Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A.

 THE FORGOTTEN GREAT FILM COMPOSER

Leonard Rosenman first became a film composer after World War II. Originally he was intended to be a painter and artist. His interest turned into music soon after the war. He studied in New York and in Europe under Austrian musician Arnold Schoenberg, who was famed for his atonal music and twelve-tone technique. Schoenberg's impact on the young musician was immediate. Ever since his first scores for The Cobweb (1955), Rosenman used the twelve-tone technique frequently. Other techniques he used often include atonal and serial-music technique. Throughtout the years, Rosenman had a relatively small impact on the history of film music. Yet his unique style always provide a sense of complexity and sensibility. Though retired, he still wrote music scores for films once in a while. The latest work he did was Jurij (2001).
