Jim Stark is the star. He might have been confused and troublesome, but he is the true spirit of courage and love. Like many teenagers, Jim has his own problems with his parents. He has made many attempts to break the barrier in between, especially to his father, who is unable to provide him security and fails to stands up as his role model. At school, he tries to make friends with a school gang. He wants to "feel belonged to some place", but he ends up being called a "chicken"--a term that reminds him of his father's cowardness. A tragedy occurs when Buzz Gunderson, the leader of the gang, accidentally kills himself in a "chickie run" challenge with Jim. Enraged by his parents' irresponsible suggestions after the accident, he runs away from home with new friends Judy and Plato. The three rebellious teenagers find love and happiness from each other in a vacant mansion, until another tragedy shocks them and turns everything upside down... Would Jim survive his stormy adolescence and make a successful transformation into adulthood?
