A dovecote in Kato Petali. Scattered all over the island, these were once used to breed doves, which in Hellenic culture were objects of worship associated with eros. Later the interest became more pragmatic: pigeons were ready food. But building a dovecote remained a sign of dignity, the grander and more decorative the better. Now they mostly serve as storerooms, or just as well-maintained ornaments on the landscape.
