Officer Elections

You should have been there.
Officer Elections were held at the November General Meeting
All members present at the November General Meeting voted according to the constitution. Other members of the club were nominated for but had declined the positions in advance of the meeting. The positions for Club President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer voted on and filled that night. Mike Relyea mentioned from the constitution that for your vote to be counted you had to be present for the meeting. You can not vote by e-mail. Polls can be conducted by e-mail but the bottom line is that for your voice to be heard you have to be there.
On to who was elected.
For Secretary Nic Farrow won by a landslide. In his victory speech, which was much of nothing, he failed to mention anything about having pen and paper in the future. He knows that his dive buddy will look out for him.
For Treasurer Mike Relyea won by just being there. Mike has been doing such a great job that nobody wanted to oppose him.
For Vice President there were three nominations.
Curt Steinagel received 1 vote.
Jamie Melindez received 2 votes.
Darlene Fong received 6 votes.
For President
Roger Riendeau was elected.
Roger excepted the win gracefully. If you know Roger, you understand.

The meeting was closed at 7.05 p.m.

Dive Training

Medic First Aid/CPR
By Rob Cooper, PADI Instructor

First Aid, CPR... Some have received training, some have used it, some have benefited from it, in and out of the water. But who is current? These skills are perishable. It is recommended, and in some cases required, that these skills be updated at least every two years. As current or future Rescue Divers, Divemasters and Instructors NOW is the best time to review and re-certify. There will be a one-day PADI Medic/First Aid (MFA) class on December 5th from 0800 to 1500. Cost is $60, including all materials and there are no prerequisites. Location is TBD based on class size. The class will be limited to twelve to ensure quality training.
Now, what if you were told that as a recreational diver you could receive training to provide vital first aid that can make a difference to a scuba diver with decompression illness? What it this training took only four hours?
There will be a DAN O2-Provider class on December 12th from 0800 to 1200. Cost will be $60. If it is taken in conjunction with the December 5th MFA course the combined price for both is 100 dollars. Class size will be limited to nine.
Why is oxygen so important for a dive injury? Emergency oxygen first aid may provide relief of symptoms and improve the chance of complete recovery. When someone has a diving injury like decompression sickness "the bends" or arterial gas embolism (AGE), bubbles - primarily made up of nitrogen - form in the body. If the injured diver breathes 100% oxygen, all nitrogen is eliminated from the breathing gas, which facilitates the washout of excess nitrogen in the diver's body. As a result, the size of the bubbles may be reduced and the symptoms may be relieved, making emergency oxygen one of the most effective first aid measures for diving injuries.

The point of contact for both courses is Rob Cooper at 265-8428 (h) or Darlene Fong at 267-6234(h). So what are you waiting for? Sign up now!

A Dive Report - 98/10/29

Anonymous
On a fair October Thursday just three independent minded divers loaded up and headed for the ever wet and hospitable Osezaki. For the protection of the innocent, they were to be named divers A, B, and C, until this writer noticed that there were no innocents. Therefore, they shall be hereafter named Yumi V., Michiru Y., and The Brit. in order to conceal their identities. This report has a long preamble because nothing really happened that day, except when The Brit. rushed out of the toilets asking if the ladies would like to see something bigger than they had ever seen in their lives: unblinking, they asked if he meant the enormous, sixty four megaton spider that was known to lodge in said facility. (Really, that sucker could drain the life out of a healthy rhinoceros! Luckily there were no rhinos flying around that day.) Anyway, they made two very successful dives (the divers, not the rhinos), the first lasting a whole hour and seven minutes. They saw fish, fish, and fish...........both dives! Vis was good; weather was excellent and.....there was barely a handful of other divers, it being a Thursday. Very nice! Thanks to Ms. V. for her kind driving in her red Vlvo (again encrypted to maintain personal security).

Oh! What a life.

Is this what it is all about? They do get bigger.
