NewsMOUNT KANLAON ACTIVE, MOUNTAIN CLIMBERS WARNEDBacolod City, May 3, 1998 - Mount Kanlaon has started acting up again, with volcanic earthquakes recorded in surrounding areas since April 24, according to the Negros Occidental Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council. Jose Mari Vargas, PDCC action officer, said the earthquakes were recorded by equipment installed by the Philippine Institute for Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), and occurred an average of three a day. Because of the warning signs, the community has formed a rescue federation composed of thousands of rescue volunteers from 8 cities and 3 towns in the province. A common radio communications frequency has been agreed upon for use in case of an emergency. The PDCC. meanwhile, is discouraging Green Alert, an environmental protection advocacy group, from pursuing plans for a protest activity in Mount Kanlaon this month, until after Phivolcs shall have declared the slopes safe for trekking and mountain climbing. "While the Kanlaon is showing unusual activity, we will stop people
from climbing even if we have to use force," Vargas said.
