(the true cross) On July 26th, his Mom came to visit him and arrived just when her son was celebrating the Mass. He couldn't stay with her for a long time due to his heavy workload in the parish ministry. They planned to see each other in the evening after his catechism class, which coincided with the date fixed by the government for the application in force of Law 197. Consequently, there were more children than ever- 4 thousand filling the church naves. But one event was going to tragically upset all the plans of mother and son. In fact, on July 25th, a religious fanatic and ex seminarian named Jose Ramirez, who left the seminary due to illness, and later experienced the failure of a broken engagement, tried to assassinate the governor Tejada. It was the drop of water that broke the dam! Furious, the governor and his leaders accused the clergy as responsible for the attempt. One witness from the 1930 era "secret police" of Veracruz, Mr. Angel Ojeda Luna, was 99 years old when he spoke at the ecclesiastical tribunal in 1996. "A violent thunderstorm let loose over the city." Colonel Tejada had given "Orders to arrest any priest performing their ministry." Father Landa, one of the three parish priests, lived through the events of this dismal night. On October 23rd, 1996, he testified before the ecclesiastical tribunal, "Father Rosas was at the pulpit leading catechism, Father Dario was near the baptismal font (actually, he had just finished a baptism), and I was in the opposite nave. At about 6 in the evening, someone entered by the Zamora St. Door and told me" : We're coming in to attack you. I went to the Sacristy to look for the monsignor, who was tranquil upon receiving the news. He sent the sacristan, " Go take a look what you see in the church." The sacristan returned, " I didn't see anything. " It was now 6:10pm. Father Landa relates: We were all in the same places. I didn't tell the other priests, only the monsignor. She clearly heard Father Dario telling the men, " If you want something with me, come with me to the Sacristy." " Before reaching the Sacristy, they shot him in the back. Dario fell to the ground, riddled with bullets, bathed in his own blood, exclaiming,"Jesus!" Él dice que "se desató sobre la ciudad una tormenta muy violenta." Dice también que el Coronel Tejada había dado "ordenes de detener al Sacerdote que realizará actos de culto." Pues aquí, dejo la palabra al Padre Landa, uno de los tres Vicarios. Él vivió los acontecimientos de esta lúgubre noche. Al Tribunal eclesiástico, el 23 de octubre 1996, el Padre Landa dice que " el padre Rosas estaba en el púlpito dirigiendo el catecismo, el Padre Darío cerca del bautisterio (de hecho acababa de terminar un bautismo), y yo (el Padre Landa), estaba en la otra nave. Yo por la puerta de Zamora a las seis más o menos entró un individuo y me dijo: Vamos a entrar a atacarlos, me fui a la Sacristía a buscar al Señor Cura, ahí estaba tranquilo llegue con la noticia. Él mandó al sacristán "anda ve a ver que ves en la Iglesia". El sacristán regresó: " no vió nada." Era las 6.10 de la tarde. Sigue el padre Landa: Todos estabamos en los mismos lugares, no les dijo nada a los otros padres; sólo al Señor Cura. Entraron por la puerta Oriental ( M. Molina) llegaron como 4 o 5 hombres ( pero otros testigos hablan de diez) vestidos con gabardinas militares y se fueron hasta el comulgario, se pararon y empezaron a disparar; a Rosas, no le pegaron, se protegió con el púlpito se agachó y se cubrió. Recibió el roce de una bala en la pierna. Como a dos o tres metros el Padre Acosta estaba frente a ellos. Otro testigo, la Sra. Delfina nos da un detalle importante que nos podía notar el Padre Landa, demasiado lejos par oír. Ella oyó muy bien el Padre Darío diciendo a los hombres: "Si algo quieren conmigo, acompáñenme a la Sacristía." "Antes de llegar a la Sacristía le dispararon por la espalda." Darío cayó acribillado por las balas, bañando en su sangre, exclamando "¡Jesús!
