Go to and buy Fig Dish's shove now!

Fig Dish realeased their second album in 1997 entitled when shove goes back to push. And I'm no Horatio but believe me when I say this CD is quite a worthy follow-up to their debut That's what love songs often do. I'll admit, the first time I heard it, I didn't think much of it, especially that psychotic, ear-peircing scream preceding the first track, that sounds as if a dump truck had been dropped off the Empire State building (that same scream also makes a cameo appearance in "sleep startles", check out the sound clip). But it grew on me, and quickly. Sometimes, I find myself and my friends singing choruses down our high school's hallways. The lyrics and music are superfluous. Man, I wish I could write stuff like this. If I could I wouldn't be sittin' here typin' this, that's as sure as your fat-faced mother. Snag a peek at these other reviews.

So you haven't heard their stuff, huh? Well that's okay. You suck, that's all. But here, I'll give you a second chance. Mosey on down to the sounds section and redeem yourself.

Yes, the lyrics to Shove. are up after working toiletlessly for hours with the one person I hate most in life.

Ha! That's a good one. You want tabs to Shove? Ha ha. Whoa, I haven't laughed like that in thirty years. Well, check out my tabs section anyways so I can tell you I don't have any.

Lyrics

Fig Dish was drunk at the time when they were recording this album. I have proof. The following is taken from an
interview from Music Weekly:

"We had most of the lyrics written down before we showed up at the studio," [Blake] continues. "As soon as we got there, however, we started drinking - basically, all day long. We wound up in the vocal booth at some point but nobody could remember any of the words! So, we just kinda made shit up as we went along," he laughs. "You know, 'Hey! Now that sounds pretty cool!' That's why things on the record may seem a little, uhm, obtuse at times."

Thus, these lyrics are not 100% correct. They were compiled by me and Mike. Lyrics that we were unsure of are underlined. Some underlined lyrics are not there at all (no rational guess could be decided upon), are completely wrong and some sound something like what he says. They will most likely be updated as Mike and I get second and third opinions. If you would like to comment, correct, or add on to these lyrics, please send Email to me or Mike and you will be accredited (wowee). Thanks and enjoy.

come on (don't come on) WAV 216 kb
worn down by all the questions I can't explain
so what caught dead to rights I'm the one to blame
but you
don't be such a shit about it
you
are gonna get sick without it

CHORUS:
stay inside and sleep all day
come on out at night to play
so come on, don't come on, so come on

people having accidents
while staring at the accident
so come on, don't come on, so come on
so come on, don't come on, so come on

I've grown the need to panic, there's nothing to do
You come by my place so I take it out on you
I am not cool
and I won't mean it cold
so fork over the anecdote

CHORUS

got lit up just like a Christmas tree
totally wrecked just like a DC3

I like waking up face down on the laundry pile
sometimes sleep can be such a miracle

CHORUS

when shirts get tight | pretty never hurts | dare you to vansih | bend | wheel holders | sleep startles
serene | I just want what you want | they can only hurt you | sinking feeling | all eyes upon you | track 99

doin laps with the ceiling fan

never knew how good that you had it, yeah
you're cuttin loose with the panic, yeah

CHORUS:
she knows me, she knows just like it's deep
smiles and looks back in synch
when shirts get tight, we'll get it right, she knows me

tonight, I wear the dress maybe I know best
ask a dozen times and you finally responed
cut loose with the radio on

all the beaches melt and can you ???
do you understand where the feeling goes
you think you might but you really don't

CHORUS

all my favorite sounds

speak your crap to me no more
whatever we do now has been done before

hey, the car is sunk doesn't it go ???
never knew how good that you had it, yeah
you're cuttin loose with the panic, yeah

pretty never hurts WAV 296 kb
I was kickin ass, like a dial tone
the back seat was in shreads, I was all alone
you can be my hands, and I'll pursue the ghost
the secret life of pants, get felt up the most

CHORUS:
well I can never get far till I get off
I can never get far
pretty never hurts if you know what I mean
the bet spins kill but they can't catch me
believe the hype cuz I'm so bright and you're my type
pretty never hurts if you know what I mean (you want it to)

the empty mailbox on the downest days
all the friends have fled but the sentiment stays
will I see you there when I come up for air
in the Camaro, let it be all I know

CHORUS

I was kickin ass, like dial tone
then all the Beatles died, I was all alone

dare you to vanish
I need your face, you can't believe your eyes
it's amazing how the rock slides
underneath you even as you hide
it's not ending

accelerate, it's the bridge you never walked
you blink your eyes, and wish the lights weren't on
they came on

CHORUS:
it takes the wrong sort of people to believe all your lies
it's the same silly reasons for it every time
it's the wrong set of circumstances, we know your lies
it's the same stupid reasons

drag yourself out of your bed and stand
my face it lies beside your hand
all that make up she looks like you, dare
you to vanish

accelerate, it's the bridge you never walked
ain't no rhymes that will slow you down so long
so long

she's here again, it's your own fault she's a friend
climb into the back, and she will keep you in tact
she will keep you intact

when you gonna find out when
are you gonna see summer end
will I see you in a box then
are you gonna be an afterthought like that
that's not the way I wanna see you

I used to be revolving
my fingers held the wheels while I would spin
it was only a delusion
but the dizziness was real, I could hold it in my hands
it happened but it wasn't planned

when you gonna find out when
the minutes are enormous turning in
I know I'll never see you again
but that was not what I planned
that was never what I planned

we're rollin.
oh!
sorry.
GO! Ready, go.
[silly laughter]
1, 2, 3, 4!

no, I don't give advice
well, the process is too complicated
getting drunk Monday nights
it's just caffine and it's overrated, all right

and I live like a king
on the dung heap of new rock contenders
in command of the long haired defenders
I don't have to come up with a thing, it's all right

the champagne's getting old
Split the old dead and wait fo rthe new dead

open up for the new antiseptic
raise your hand if you lived through the outbreak, all right

[At this point, they sing something twice, sadly incomprehensible to both me and Mike. Please help!]

if you feel weird then you look weirdif you feel strange then you look strange
breaking every code
are you still speeding
are you still the same
it's all right

it's a waste of time to be so calm
when you realize you really don't belong
too wired, too clean
too tired to wait and see

Please come over me

finding everything that you've said and done
slowly crawling upon your back
timing only keeps up the ???
bad luck never underfed

if I saw your face I would surely run
to the nearest far off place
and still the after taste, it would linger on
let them tell you it's not so bad
you don't even notice you've been had
keep your secrets to yourself well
they can only hurt you when you sleep

finding everything that you've said and done
slowly crawling upon your back
timing only keeps up the ???

Reviews

Many thought it impossible for the band to beat their last album, but the band's latest effort marks a new high for Fig Dish. No one will be disappointed with the new music. Songs like, "Dare You to Vanish," "Bend," "I Just Want," "Serene," "When Shirts Get Tight," "Sleep Startles" and "Come On (Don't Come On)," prove that Fig Dish is definitely a force to be reckoned with in today's ever-changing music scene. New rock pretenders? No way! This album shows that Fig Dish has what it takes to make a hit record that will last forever. Now all the world needs is to take notice.
-- MusicWeekly

For fans of Fig Dish's 1995 debut, That's What Love Songs Often Do, the good news is that, on their sophomore effort, the Chicago quartet still sounds ferociously chunky and their lyrics remain unpredictably sharp. Even better news is that wit -- an all-too-often missing ingredient in contemporary rock -- is even more abundant on When Shove Goes Back to Push. The Dish smoothly straddles alt-rock angst and indie ennui, and has no fear of losing its credibility with a little subtle, dry humor.

Such fabulous guitar-heavy pop songs as "Pretty Never Hurts" (where guitarist-vocalist Blake Smith sings laconically, "I was kicking ass like a dial tone/All the Beatles died, I was all alone" -- such lovable existential nonsense!) and "Come On (Don't Come On)" swing with whimsical wordplay and catchy bop. Making for a meaty contrast are gentler-paced tunes like the moody "Bend" and the pensive "Wheel Holders"; both are nimbly constructed, with a weighty cynicism hanging above soporific beats and easygoing melodies.

Maybe the "Clash City Rockers"-meets-"The Kids Are Alright" verve of "Sleep Startles" sums up Fig Dish best. The band completely botches the beginning of the song, but simply laughs it off and keeps recording. It's that lack of pretentiousness, the idea that making music is fun, that keeps Fig Dish fresh.
--Linda Laban, Wall of Sound

Well Fig Dish rules live. Their set was one of the best sets I have ever seen. They played every song I hoped to hear and played them to perfection. They even got a good review from the biggest a**hole in music ... The mosh pit during their set was great, but it will leave me sore for days to come. If Fig Dish comes to your town you better go -- you do not want to miss this band live.
