Dinki's Favorite Austin Bands

a.k.a. "the austin band graveyard"

I mention alot of bands on this site, but if you're not from Austin, there's a good chance that you have no idea what they sound like. Don't worry, just click on the image and listen to a piece of one of their songs.

Cosmetic

The Softs

this is part of a Softs song called "Cosmetic" off of their CD, The Nurse Wore Black. I can't help but get nostalgic now listening to this even though they only broke up about a month ago. I miss their shows.

60's Girl Lover

Carbomb

Okay, so carbomb ain't around anymore...but as long as they're still releasing stuff, we can pretend they are. Chris and Mike are now in Tune in Tokyo, a band worth the hearing loss incurred. This song is a bit of 60's girl lover off carbomb's limited edition CD, released only in Austin. Oooh, I bet those San Antonio kids are just too jealous for words.

Now, you must realize that I'm playing "generations" here with the next few excerpts. The sound quality is bad due to dubbing ep's onto tapes and then changing the file types from aiff to au. Enjoy the lo-fi quality from your hi-tech computer.

Half of What

...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead

you can also try to download the big ol' honkin' aiff version, which sounds better. If you have a slow modem, you might want to go paint your house or something while it downloads .

This is part of "Half of What", one of my favorite songs from the self-titled release on Trance Syndicate. They played this as an encore (ha, ha...an encore, yes, really, I'm serious) at some big-ass show at the Electric Lounge back in early May of 1998, right before they went on tour. All I could think when I was watching these guys was, "fuck! They're gonna get famous, I just know it."

All Dressed Up

The Kiss Offs

Here's one band that never disappoints a kid. They have pyrotechnics, makeup, smooth clothes, and songs that keep you listening and dancing."All Dressed Up" isn't as trashy as some of their stuff, but I still like it because it's about getting stood up and then getting drunk. These kids know how love hurts! I also think that the way Katey and Travis's shouts compete in this song is so cool. They are on tour right now, playing all across America, so go out and see these awesome kids play your town. I mean it.

Whistle Happy
and Party In SA

woozyhelmet

now, don't call me a monkey for putting my own band's songs up here. How could I resist? I feel that these are two of our more fun songs...although "Raragraragra" is a good one, too. These songs appear courtesy Soda Pop Productions. When performed live, "Party in SA" is alot faster and has real drums but no keys.

Biting My Nails

Silver Scooter

This song is taken from a fairly old 7" on Peek a Boo Records. These three boys put together some terrific tortured indie pop songs with driving rhythms and personal lyrics. They have a full length out on Peek a Boo records that I listen to so much I'll probably wear out the vinyl.

Please Wait During the Silence

Paul Newman

This excerpt is from their 7" on Twistworthy Records. They have a 12" out on Trance Syndicate now, too. I don't know what to say except that these fellas are math masters who play some of the most engaging instrumentals I've heard.

Kevin Costner

Society of Friends

I saw these kids play at the Blue Flame back in March and it was the first time I'd seen Austin kids get so rowdy at a show in forever. Harley and Jeff were doing Kung Fu type moves while everyone else was either trying to be a tough guy or goofing off, too.

Unknown

The Prima Donnas

People dance at these guys' shows too, but not like they did at the Society of Friends show. You have to be really drunk to properly enjoy a Prima Donnas show. Their friends usually bring all kinds of junk to throw at them, so you have to watch out for stuff like hot dogs, pennies, etc.

This song is unknown because I took it from a KVRX Local Live recording. I chose this particular segment of this particular song because when I dragged some friends to the Prima Donnas in-store performance in December, my pals all had simultaneous reactions to it. I think Andres came really close to peeing on himself from laughter.

They abandoned us last year to go be rock stars in Olympia, so look for their 7"s on KRS now. I saw them play at YoYoAGoGo this summer and it was just like the old days... weirdness and dancing and girls screaming; I threw all my change at them.
