Driver's

Author: Tatum Fjerstad

BOOM!

I'm sixteen and I'm driving along, then, all of the sudden, BOOM! I crash into a pole. I lay quietly resting my head on the steering wheel of a 97 Outback Subaru. I wasn't dead though, I felt like I was resting.

"Angel, Angel, wake up sweetheart," a faint, gentle voice called out to me.

I stirred. My eyes fluttered open to reveal my mother hovering over me smiling. Only a dream. My mom smiled and left the room. I streched and yawned. I stepped into my pink bunny slippers and walked over to my drapes. I let the Sunday morning sunshine in. I opened my window halfway letting the fresh spring air into my room.

"Angel, your drivers test is on Tuesday! Don't forget!"

My mom was calling fom downstairs. She is the most sweet, elegant woman in the world. Some kids can't stand their mom for one moment, but I can't stand a moment with out mine. I could smell the sweet smelling aroma of her "Aroura" perfume. Along with the smell of her famous Sunday breakfast, which included the following; Pancakes, eggs, bacon, and sausage. Almost everything is made from scratch.

"Thanks Mom," she's a great mom, however I wish she hadn't told me that. You see I've dreaded the day of my drivers test for two weeks now. I have a thing about crashes and all those accidents that happen on the road. Reminding me of that was the worst thing mom could have done.

Unlike my mom, my dad is a drinker. His weekly schedule consists of going to work at a constuction site, coming home looking like trash, kissing mom with his filthy lips, nodding at me, heading out to the garage to grab a beer from the fridge, and work on some masterpeice. Some times I think dad is having an affair with his tools and beer.

"Mom?"

"Yes, honey?"

"You're still taking me to the drivers test right?"

"Of course!"

I screamed .

I had that stupid dream again.

Beep. Beep. Beep.

Ohmygosh! I totally forgot that it was Monday! I quickly got up and wen to my closet opening the door fast.

There was a small corpse wearing my white expensive dress staring at me. It started to rise slowly extending it's arms toward me. I stared lamely.

"Get out of my room Andy. That better not be my real dress."

"It isn't. Man don't you know how to have any fun?"

"Not with you."

That was my little brother Andy. Did I tell you about him? You don't want to know! He a little self involved creep that's obsesed with sci-fi.

I slumped down the stairs and got out some Honey Nut Cheerios. When the phone rang. I got up lazily and picked up the receiver.

"Hello?"

"Angel?"

"Hi, Mom."

"Angel, you, uh, have to go with your father on the drivers test. The time has been changed to ten a.m. and you don't have any school, tomorrow.

"What? Mom! You know how I feel about dad?! "

"Yes, but I have to be at Andy's PTA meeting!"

"Can't you cancel or something?"

"NO! I can't I'm sorry, I love you, I have to go now, bye.

"Yeah."

'Click.'

After breakfast I walked up stairs and slipped on my long sleeved-light-blue-stiped-across-the-front T. With my Levi flares.

At school all my friends were gabbing about their drivers test and how nervous they were. They had no idea.

When I got home, mom was setting the table for dinner.

"Hi, hon!"

"Hi."

I walked up stairs to my room and dropped my bag on the floor. I plopped on my bed and thought until dinner.

We were all sitting around the dinner table, except for dad. When, speak of the devil, dad walked in. Instead of his usual nod he said something to me.

"Hey honey, ready to burn some rubber?" And walked off laughing his head off. When he left I leaned over the table to mom and said:

"Mom, I'm scared! Dad's weird! Aren't you the least bit scared?"

Mom just blushed, I could tell she was scared too.

After dinner I helped clean up and did homework then went to bed.

I woke up to this," Angel, Angel, uh, it's time to wake up. It's, uh, 9:00 and you have to do your make-up and whatever."

"Thanks."

"Yeah, -k- are you gonna get up?"

"Yeah, dad."

He kinda sounded sweet when he said that.

I got ready and we got in the car, a 97 Outback Subaru, with me in the drivers seat. Then dad says,

"We have to pick up one of my friends."

"What?! Oh, uh, I mean you better drive then."

What nerve, one of the most important days in my life and not only do I have to do it with my dad, but one of his friends, too!

When we got there the dude had a hat on and I couldn't see his face. Dad and him both sat in the back. It wasn't very hard to drive because I just stopped on red and drove straight.

When we got to the spot, dad said, "You can do it,"and with that he pulled out a beer. He and his frined went on a drinking binge. I was freaked.

Dad said, "Drive Doofus!" as he hopped around gurgling in the back seat.

I drove siltently hoping for the best. Taking each turn with care. Suddenley his pal crawled up front and stared me up an down.

"Hey, man you daughter's a babe!"

"Yeah, she's got her mothers looks."

I refused to answer.

Then off my quietness, his pal said, "Drive Doofus!"

I gripped the wheel until my knuckles turned white.

I said shakily, " Look, this isn't the easiest thing in the world, I would appreciate if you kept your tone down, please."

Then Dad's friend pulled out a pocket knife, and took off his hat to reveal that he was a she, and that she was my mom!

"Mom?!"

"Oooooh, your quick!"

"But-"

"You never liked your father! There is a reason why I married him!"

"You set this up?"

"Yes, I wanted to show you that your father can be nice, when he isn't drinking. He has been working on his problems in the garage! Now you'll pay for all the heartache!"

With that she grabbed the steering wheel and we drove into post. Everything went black. Just like my dream.

I heard voices. I blinked open my eyes. I heard a doctor tell me that I was the only surviver. My brother was sitting next to me in the hospital bed.

"Hi, Andy. What happened?"

"You crashed. Remember? Mom and Dad died, they weren't wearing their seatbelts."

A nurse entered the room in her bright white hat.

"Hi, Angel, it's time for your shot!"

She pulled off her mask and smiled.

I screamed. Andy screamed.

It was mom.
