Coming off of a "disappointing" 1999 season, which most drivers would call their greatest season of their career, is looking to return to the dominance he enjoyed in his three Winston Cup Championship seasons. In 1999 Gordon won a series-leading seven races, finished in the top-5 eightteen times, and walked away from the season earning over $5 million in prize money. With all these stats, it's hard to believe Gordon finished sixth in the points standings. Maybe more important than any of those stats, six DNF's. Those six races he didn't finish are more than those of '97 and '98 combined, and the most in one season for Gordon since 1994. The driver of the #24 will be a man with a mission in 2000. In 1997 Jeff won 10 races as he became the first driver to win over $6 million dollars in one season, having a large part of that coming from the Daytona 500 victory and winning the Winston Million. Jeff became just the second person ever to win the Winston Million since Bill Elliott did it the year it was started. Jeff won the championship by just 14 points with his 17th place finish at the NAPA 500. Jeff Gordon is known as the youngest NASCAR Winson Cup Series chapion in the modern era. He won his first championship at the age of 24. Bill Rexford won the title at age 23 in 1950. Jeff started racing at age 5, racing go-karts and quarter-midgets. In 1992 on the Busch Grand National Series Jeff won a record 11 poles. Jeff Gordon was the Winston Cup Rookie of the Year in 1993. Jeff has won 2 inaugural events, the Brickyard 400 in 1995 and the California 500 in 1997. 2000 will be Jeff's 8th full year in the Winston Cup series. He has raced in a total of 223 races with 49 wins, 111 top-5s, 137 top-10s, and has won $26,982,215 in his career. These stats are all current after the completion of the 1999 season.
