All About The 1999 Chevy Silverado

Answers,Questions and Concerns

The 1999 Chevy Silverado has to be the most awe inspiring Chevy ever to roll off the production line. Becoming available sometime this September, it should prove to be a long lasting, dependable work truck for years to come, and the new Silverado is built in this tradition-Whether you choose Base, LS or LT trim level in either the 1500 or 2500 series. Also new in 1999 is three (Yep Count em, 3!) new Vortec V-8 engines available.(There is also a rumor that Caterpillar will start making the deisel engines in Chevy Trucks).

When it came to redesigning the Chevy full size pickup, the Silverado R&D team faced a tough question:" What do you do when you have the longest lasting, most dependable, most satisfying truck on the market?..."

The Answer-You make it bigger, faster, stronger and smarter!

The Silverado name has been with Chevy trucks since 1975 on the top of the line models. So when it came time to name the brand new full size truck...Naturally, the choice was easy.

According to Chevrolet General Manager John Middlebrook The new Chevy Silverado will become the standard of pickup design and construction. He was also quoted as saying that the Silverado will surpass all of its predecessor in terms of durability, power, roominess, and quality.

As the Chevy truck flagship, the Silverado will generate bigger annual sales and higher levels of owner quality.

Pickup trucks today are fairly complecated vehicles. But it wasnt long ago when they were all pretty easy to understand.

FOR EXAMPLE:

The frame. When it was introduced in 87, the C/K's box section was considered state of the art. Recently, the competition have started to use a frame design remarkably like the Silverado's.

Independent Front Suspension. Chevy's A-arm IFS has always given a quality ride and increased handling. Ford recently dropped its TTB (twin traction beam) suspension for an IFS remarkably like Chevy's.

Standard Four Wheel ABS. GM was the first to offer rear wheel anti lock brakes (ABS) on full size trucks. Now ABS is a common feature industry wide, although, the competion only offers a rear wheel system.

Ergonomics. When Chevy brought out the new C/K's in 87, Ergononics was a new term included in Chevy's dealership manuals. Today all of the competition claim to have the most comfortable cab.

And More...GM offered the first full size pickups with shift on the fly 4-wheel drive and two tiered loading.

Small Block V-8's

In addition to the 4300 Vortec V-6 and the 6.5 Liter Turbo Diesel, the new Silverado will feature a new generation of Vortec small block V-8 Engines. The new Silverado features three small block V-8's all of which offer more horsepower than today's small block V-8's...And more than any comparable engine offered by the competition.

STIFFER STRUCTURE: The Vortec's deep skirt block design adds the stiffness and durability. Its similar to the all aluminum Corvette version introduced last year, except the blocks are cast iron. Other components such as the valley cover and the oil pan are designed as structural members to ad rigidity.

REDUCED FRICTION: Instead of mounting valves and pushrods at complex angles, the new block allows them to be mounted "In Line", reducing stress, internal friction and heat.

REDUCED EMISSIONS: Pistons have been redisigned, with the piston rings located closer to the top of the pistons, reducing the area where hydro-carbon emissions are created and thus lowering the Vortec's emissions greatly.

IMPROVED SEALING: Sealing surfaces and joints have been redesigned to eliminate contours and curves that were more difficult to seal. In addition, aluminum carrier gaskets are used for greater durability.

BETTER BREATHING: High flow cylinder ports and a composite intake manifold contribute to better air flow, which enhances power output.

QUIET OPERATION: In addtion to stiffer structure, Vortec V-8's feature a dual belt drive accessory drive system which cut engine noise in half.

Bigger

Silverado has the biggest interior of any 1/2 or 3/4 ton pickup under 8,600 lb. GVWR.

Faster

With Three new Vortec V-8 engines, Silverado delivers legendary Vortec strength and dependability, plus the most powerful V-8 of any full size pickup.

Stronger

Silverado is built to handle heavier loads than its predecessor, with increased GCWR for all models.

Smarter

Tow/Haul Mode - An exclusive GM feature found on Silverado's automatic transmissions, delays upshifts to deliver more pulling power in heavy trailering or hauling situations

The trucks more Americans trust.
