Meet Chester....He is an Umbrella Cockatoo (Cacatua alba) Chester is 1 year old. Chessie has a very long story behind him , he came to us after weaning...was fine for a month & then quit eating , he lost 100 grams through his ordeal. Chessie spent a week in the hospital and now seems to be fine. He was diagnoised with possible PDD (Proventricular Dilation Disease)
After many hard decisions, we brought him home (this was VERY scary because of my other birds) Christmas of 1997 is when he rejoined our family. Today he is eating well & has gained back the 100 grams he lost, his illness is still unknown.He acts very
happy , plays ,eats like a horse and even says a few words. He is a real teddy bear!
P.D.D. is a VERY serious disease for which there is no test & no cure. Common signs for this disease are weight loss,passing undigested seeds,regurgitation,vomiting,neurolical signs,abdominal distension & impaction of the crop. All of these signs may or may not be present. If your bird shows any of these signs, please take him to a qualified avian vet immediatly. This disease can also mimick many other things , so make sure your vet checks all possibilities. We almost put our dear Chester to sleep for fear he was in pain & dying. We still do not know for sure if he has or ever had P.D.D. as the only 100% answer lies in a dead bird.I only hope that the experience we had with Chester will enable us to help someone else.
