Having trouble getting my quarterhorse to back. He's 4
years old and we have started him on small jumps - no problem with walk, trot,
canter, even flying lead changes. Backing is another story. At halter, no

Sandy, I am a 40-year old wannabe rider recently
re-entering the field after 5 years off with my little ones (who only have 2
legs). I have done a bit of dressage and eventing, at the very lowest level,
never had the privilege of riding a good horse. I am wond ring if it is worth
the cost, and the extraordinary investment of time, to find an event
schoolmaster. I realize I do not have the talent to train a horse to higher
levels. In order to get there before I'm 95, I've got to find a horse that knows
a whole lot more than I do. My husband, unfortunately, does not agree, and seems
to think a schoolmaster will be very difficult to ride. What does conventional
wisdom from the experienced equestrian think? I am also very interested in the
art of long reining, ut cannot find anyone here who can teach it or knows a
thing about it. Do you? I found your site while I was searching for "Polish
Warmblood," because my current trainer tells me the registry is very strict on
temperament, an extremely important quality to me since I cannot afford to get
hurt - I'm a crazy working homeschool Mom with quite a schedule that will not
accomodate illness or injury. If you know of any reputable horses or breeders or
owners, any referrals would be welcome. By the way, Colt's eck is a beautiful

I've been riding hunters for 3 and a half years. Right
now I'm riding a yr old WB gelding named Jeff, he's 15.3hh and has a huge stride
(as my instructor says "There's pony size strides, horse size strides, and Jeff
size strides" :)) I've jumped up to 2'6 on him so far. I have a question on
flying lead changes and on picking up the correct lead on the straight away.
First the changes -my instructor's been having me work on them by doing figure
eights using the whole ring (change direction across the diagonal). She says to
go forward, look straight ahead, and then when I get to the rail bend him in
hard, put my weight to the outside and squeeze or kick with my outside leg. I
get them about 75% of the time I'd say, but a lot of the time he won't change in
the back. I think with practice I'll figure it out, but I also have a show in 7
weeks! (they haven't mailed the new lasslists so we still don't know what I'm
showing in! Equitation stuff probably, but I may have to start with Novice
Hunter because last year it was only 2'-2'3"). Do you have any tips on how I can
get the changes without looking like I'm trying to? I thi k my instructor might
make too big of a deal out of it, so maybe I'm trying too hard. My first
instinct when picking up the correct lead on a straightaway is to close my
inside rein, add a little inside leg to bend the horse, and use my outside leg.
However my instructor has recently told me I should close my *outside* rein and
open my ins de rein (which I'd assume would be a bad thing to do in a show...)
and of course outside leg. The problem with that is sometimes I end up bending
Jeff out. Also I think a clinician at the Equine Affaire said to put wieght on
your outside seatbone. What do you think is the best method? Thanks a lot!

Hello! I like your site! It provides some good
information! Its nice to hear what Real judges have to say! Anyways, I am 14 and
I LOVE horses!! I will do almost anything I can do be around horses! I have been
doing H/j"s for about 6 months. Before I id English pleasure. So we're
retraining me and my horse! (who is a 7yr old TB mare) I would be greatful if
you could give me any tips!! I'm having trouble keeping my leg in position and
my heels down. Its alot diffrent the english pleasure!! I usually can keep my
position good when I'm schooling or in lessons when I wear my chaps but at shows
in my breeches and boots, my leg slides around alot more. I want to eventually
show grand prix jumpers and be a trainer and maybe show in medal classes! I
would so greatly appreciate it if you can send me some helpfull tips or
excercises or anything! Also, I'm having trouble keeping my horse off her
forehand, Especially on the flat! IN english pleasure we wanted her on her
forehand (i'm not sure why, but thats wh t my old trainer said) so shes used to
moving on her forehand. She doesnt normally do it when we're jumping, but every
now and then she does. I ride her in a plain snaffle. the subject has arised
about me getting a new horse! But I dont want to sell my ho se now! I've owned
her for 4 years and we've been through so much together, I dont think I could
ever part with her. I love her too much! And we cant afford to bored two horses.
Plus shes an AWSOME jumper! She really rounds her back and tucks her knees up
under her chin! So I would greatly appreciate it if you can send me some tips!

I recently sold a horse to a friend. She had problems
getting the mare to load into the trailer. All the tugging & pulling
resulted in the mare rearing. I finally got her loaded. Now, the new owner is

Hello Sandy! Great site! I find a striking resemblance to
your "Hermes" and my "Magnum"! I'm always looking to meet and talk with other
JRT owners especially ones so close by! My father lives in Colts Neck as well!
Magnum has not had a chance to meet hors s yet but I'd love for him to have that
experience. Maybe we will go to a horse show sometime..seems that's a great
