GENERATION 1
Daniel Boone Sherry born about 1768, died in Delaware Co., Indiana before 1850. Place of internment unknown. Married Nancy Devore born in New Jersey about 1770 and died after 1850, The couple were married in Mason Co., Kentucky on November 24, 179(6)(4) (Daniel and Nancy both were past an average age for a first marriage, 28 yrs. & 26 yrs. The marriage could have been several years earlier, at least prior to 1793 as the children, Nicholas's and Sarah's ages indicate such could be the case.) . A Nicholas Sherry, relationship unknown, but a possible brother, married a Polly Nall, Mason Co., Kentucky, January 18, 1798. In 1850 Census Union Twp., Delaware Co., In., Nancy (Devore) Sherry's age given as 80 years. She was at her son's residence, David Sherry, whose location was in the area south of the Misissinewa River among the settlers of German descent, Daniel and son, David, entered land in Section 34, Union Twp. and those nearest in the census of 1850 owned land in Sections 33, 35, 26 and etc. Several family members were residing in the immediate area. There children were:

GENERATION 2

S-1

Nicholas Sherry born about 1793, 1850 Census age 57 yrs., perhaps age is an error, some have suggested that the 1850 census may have read age 51 years rather than the 57 years which it appears to be. He died in 1876. Nicholas Sherry married Elizabeth Jolly, She was born 1797 in Kentucky, marriage license dated March 1, 1821 in Ripley Co., In. He entered land in Section 33, Union Twp, Delaware Co., Indiana in he years 1835-36. near his father and brother in Section 34.

S-2

Sarah Sherry born April 16, 1793, died September 2, 1875, married James Miller, born November 5, 1785, died November 22, 1856, date married October 15, 1809 in Adams Co., Ohio. Internment at Church of the Brethern Cemetery. Sarah's date of birth is taken from her grave stone. The date of marriage would indicate she would not have been born at a later date, age 16 years at time of her marriage in 1809. The Miller residence was also in the area of Sarah's father and brothers. James and Sarah entered land in the southeast corner of Section 26, Union Twp. They attended the old German Church of the Brethren on the Mississinewa River.

Absolom Sherry born December 2, 1801, died October 18, 1879, married Rachel Breezly, born May 11, 1807, died February 17, 1892, date married June 9, 1825, Rush Co., Indiana. Internment in Union Cemetery, Delaware Co., In.

John Sherry born about 1810 in Ohio, married Eliza Ann Kirkpatrich born about 1814, date married November 6, 1834, Rush Co., Indiana

S-5

David Sherry born July 3, 1813, died June 22, 1893 married Synthia Kirkpatrick, February 4, 1836, Rush Co., Indiana. "Cynthia" died about 1846. David Sherry second married La Rue Battrell. (William Perry Sherry Bio.) (Lonhama Battrell in marriage record, February 16, 1848, Delaware Co., Indiana). !850 Federal Census Union Twp. Delaware Co., In. lists David Sherry's family with Susannah Sherry age 29 years as wife. There is probably an answer to this confusion of aliases. Further check of marriage records of the names Battrell and Larowe or La Rue might resolve this problem, plus additional census records, Probate Court records etc. A Joseph Battrell entered land in Section 26 in the years 1835-36

Milton Sherry born November 5, 1823, died November 24, 1876, married Mariah Shannon April 24, 1845, Delaware Co., Indiana. They are buried in the Leaird Cemetery, Delaware Co., Indiana. The small stone does not read Milton but rather reads Miller Sherry. Was his name Milton Miller Sherry or some other explanation? His wife, Mariah, children John, William, and Goldberry and several Shannon inlaw families are buried near his and his wife's graves or in cemetery. I do not have the answer to this Milton - Miller grave stone mystery. In the 1850 Federal Census Milton Sherry and wife, Mariah Shannon Sherry were living next to his parents, Nicholas and Elizabeth Jolly Sherry residence and the residence of his brother, John Sherry.

BIO. OF ALFRED MILLER
DELAWARE COUNTY HISTORY

Alfred Miller Uncle of Millie Rarick McKinley

Alfred Miller, one of the pioneer agriculturist of Delaware County, has long been recognized as one of her best and leading citizens, while his straight forward, manly course through life may well serve as an example to the young.
He was born in Brown County, Ohio, January 16, 1820, a son of James and Sarah Shery Miller, the former of whom was born near Lexington, Kentucky and the latter in Brown County, Ohio.
In a very early day Mr. James Miller located in Ohio, and in 1819 he removed to Ripley County, Indiana, where he entered one hundred and sixty acres of timber land and built a little log cabin in the wilderness. Later this rude structure gave place to a hewed log house and barn, but after a time he left that place and came to Delaware County, where he purchased eighty acres of John U. Studebaker in Union Township, cleared the land of its dense growth of timber and spent the remainder of his life there, dying at the age of seventy three years. His wife was eighty years of age when she was summoned to the home beyond. They were married in Brown County, Ohio, and became the parents of nine children, of whom only three are living now. Alfred whose name introduces this review; Mary Ann, the widow of William H. Brinson, and a resident of Switzerland County, Indiana; and Sarah, the widow of John Rarick, and a resident of Union Township.
Mr. Alfred Miller was but a little babe two months old at the time of his parents' removal to Ripley County, Indiana, and during his young manhood he worked in Kentucky, near Rising Sun, cutting cord wood, which he hauled to the river and loaded on flat boats preparatory to selling to the steamers running up and down the river. He thus continued until 1838, when he purchased 40 acres of land from David Chery (Sherry) in Union Township, Delaware County, paying one hundred dollars for the tract of timber. Building a log cabin, he brought his bride to the new home. Later he traded it for eighty acres of land owned by Robert Buckles etc. --. Alfred was once serving as trustee of the township. He was a whig and later served the Republican party.
Alfred married Sophonia Yates on April the 9th, 1839. They had nine children of this union five are now living; Becky, Mary E., John, Jonathan a resident of Muncie, and Joseph.

After the death of his wife Alfred married Mrs. George W. Jacobs, April 10, 1877 etc.

copied from an abstract of the original for the purpose of genealogical material only: Alfred is buried in the old Church of the Brethren Cemetery. His grave stone states; b. January 17, 1819, d. December 27, 1907. It seems Alfred married Mrs. George W. Jacob "Annie Jacob" April 09, 1885, Delaware Co., In. Records. His wife Sophonia Yates Miller died June 11, 1894 and buried in old unrecorded section of Union Cemetery, date is taken from her grave stone. Could someone have mistakenly dated this grave stone as to the date of death? Mary Annie Welhelm Jacobs Miller died November 9, 1917 and is buried in the recorded section of the Union cemetery.Dela. Co., In. (cet 8-14-96)

HOOVER-RARICK-MCKINLEY
CONNECTION

John H. Rarick lost his first wife, Elizabeth Shoemaker Rarick who died at their home in., Ohio on July 5, 1864 and laid to rest at the Old Harris Creek Church Graveyard.

The bio. of John H. Rarick in the publication by Ralph Rarick (not close kin) "The Mississinewa Church of the Brethern " states that Sarah Miller Snider married in 1867 and about three years later moved to Indiana and lived near the present site of Union Grove. I believe this is misleading and John came to Union Twp. Delaware County, Indiana about 1866 or very early in 1867. He may have been drawn to the area by his brother-in-law and sister-in-law David Minnich Shoemaker and Leah Deeter Shoemaker, who prior to 1867 left Miami Co., Ohio to settled in section 31, Union Township, Delaware Co., Indiana. Leah Deeter Shoemaker's parents, John and Mary Bollinger Deeter, had settled in section 33 about the same time. These Brethren perhaps notified John H. Rarick that the widow Sarah Snider might become his bride if he pursued a cause of action with that intention. One wonders whether the couple after the wedding lived in Sarah's residence or went to John's old residence in Miami Co., Ohio until a time after the purchase of the 240 acres of land in section 29, November 26, 1869, where they lived until their deaths. It is probable Sarah remained in her old residence until John settled affairs in Miami Co., Ohio. His two daughters Mary Rarick Deeter and Fanny Rarick Martin may have keep their residence in Miami Co., Ohio.

John Rarick and wife sold John's farm ( West part of the South West 1/4 of Section 27, T 9, R 4. NewBerry Twp., Miami Co., Ohio 89 acres) to Issac N. Hoover (Isaac would seem to be a cousin of John's) on November 20, 1869. It would appear that Sarah Miller Snider Rarick was there at the time of the sale. John had business in both locations and so went back and forth during the three year intreval. John Hoover Rarick kept a close association with his first wife's parents and her brothers and sisters throuhout his life and had a close association with his mothers kin. It is said that his mother Elizabeth Hoover Rarick married Jacob Wise and that her death occurred at Elkhart Co., Indiana and her burial is in the Yellow Creek Cemetery.

John was an active member of the Mississinewa & Union Grove Churches of the Brethren. He was born December 22, 1819 in Miami Co., Ohio, the son and youngest of nine child of Jacob and Elizabeth Hoover Rarick. John H. Rarick died at his home April 6, 1890, Union Twp. Delaware Co., Indiana and is buried in the Mississinewa Church of the Brethren Cemetery next to his wife, Sarah Miller Snider Rarick. Sarah died January 30, 1910 at the old home place. Her first husband Jacob Miller is buried next to her also.
