Welcome to the Wallingford Family Website!

My name is Darryn Lickliter and I am descended from Benjamin and Prudence Wallingford who settled in Mason County, Kentucky. I first became interested in genealogy as a result of a school project in the eigth grade. I was required to trace my family back five generations. During my research, I learned of a chart my great-grandfather, Paul Payton, had prepared. He was raised by his grandparents, George and Malinda (Johnson) Payton, and the chart included information on them, their children, George's parents and siblings. George's mother was Nancy Wallingford. I was hooked! I spent years searching in courthouses and libraries in Indiana finding bits and pieces of information on the Wallingfords until I was able to verify, from independent sources, the information on the chart. The next breakthrough came on a visit to a Family History Center.

While going through the Family History Library Catalog, I came across an entry for a manuscript collection on the Wallingford Family. Simply titled "Wallaingford family records", by Charles Harlan Murrow, the collection consists of four reels of microfilmed material from the Iowa State Historical Society. The first reel, Film #1020765 (Item 10), contains information on the descendants of Phoebe Wallingford Murphy Blue. The second reel, Film #1020766, consists of a genealogy of the Wallingfords. The fourth reel, Film 1020768 (Item 1), contains a genealogy of the New England branch of the family. The genealogies presented on these three films, provide little in the way of documentation and contain many typographical errors, as well as some errors in lineage. As such, they should be used with a grain of salt. In spite of their shortcomings, however, I have found that the relationships described in them are more likely to be correct than not. The real gem in the collection is the third reel.

Titled "Miscellaneous records, 1-3", LDS Film #1020767 contains the research notes of Charles Harlan Murrow and Charles C. Wallingsford. Both men obtained most of their information by writing to living descendants and asking them to provide what information they had on their own families. Typed copies of their letters contain transcriptions of Bible records; family anecdotes; addresses of other relatives; obituaries and many other records.

In 1997 I decided to use my own research to update and correct Murrow's & Wallingsford'd manuscript material and make it available on the web. In the initial phase, I posted the basic information I had for each family. My plan was to then go back and enhance the website with more details on each individual and to completely document the information presented. Unfortunately, my personal life and a couple of computer crashes got in the way and I have not been able to update my site for the last two years. I am now prepared to pick up where I left off and over the next few months I will be bringing the site up to date. Thank you to all of you who have been supportive of the Wallingford Family Website and the Wallingford Mailing List over the years.
