Will of John Murdock, Sr.

I,  John Murdock, Senior, of  the county of Lincoln and State of Tennessee, Farmer, do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament, in order to dispose of those things which God in his infinite Goodness has bestowed upon me while sojourning here upon Earth, hereby revoking all other wills by me at any time made either written or verbal.

And 1st, I bequeath my body to the ground, with suitable interment, and my soul to God who gave it, the expense of my burial to be paid out of the first money that may come into the hands of my executor after my decease.

2nd, I bequeath to my son John Murdock my tract of land whereon I now live with all the emoluments beflonging thereto, with this provision only that my wife Isabella Murdock shall have her maintenance therefrom during her life, as shall also my daughters Nancy Murdock,* Eliza Murdock and Rachel Murdock, are to have equal proceeds from my farm as long as they are single, but if they marry and leave the premises, then their portion is to be for the exclusive benefit of my son John Murdock.

3rd.  After all my just debts are paid, I bequeath to my children, John Murdock, Nancy, Eliza and Rachel Murdock, all my personal estate of whatever kind it may consist, to be equally apportioned to them.

4th.  When my Mother Molly Murdock dies, if living, I would be sole heir to her estate which consists principally of money out on interest to Col. John Caruthers and Major William Caruthers, of the county, all of which I bequeath to my son John Murdock and my three daughters, Nancy, Eliza and Rachel Murdock, who have faithfully waited on and attended to my said Mother Molly Murdock during her old and infirm state, to be equally divided among them at her decease.

5th.  I bequeath all the debts that may be owing me at my decease to my son John Murdock.

And lastly, I appoint my friend William B. Berry sole executor to this my last will and testament.

These things being done may my soul rest in peace.  In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 6th day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty six.                                                                                               his
