Thomas Hill of Essex Lodge, recited in a deed 21 Mar 1693 that he was the son of John Hill and grandson of Thomas Hill who first purchased Essex Lodge.  Essex Lodge first taken up by Capt. William Brocas and sold by him to Thomas Hill.  In Thomas Hill's will, York Co Hampton Parish,
VA 1711, he mentions his wife Mary, daughters, Elizabeth, Lucy, Mary and Ann Hill; his  son John Hill, to inherit his plantation called "Essex Lodge", 900 acres (York Co Records)

Thomas Bushrod, 2nd husband of Mary Peirsey Hill, in his will dated 18 Dec 1676, called himself of Essex Lodge, names "Kinsman Thomas Hill, now living in my house", and directs that he be buried by the side of "my wife Mary".  He also names "my now wife Elizabeth".  Essex Lodge originally acquired by Thomas Hill was gained by Thomas Bushrod through his marriage to Hill's widow.

Thomas Bushrod lived during his life at Essex Lodge.  His brother, Richard Bushrod was ancestor of Gen. George Washington's nephew, Judge Bushrod Washington.  During the siege of Yorktown in 1781, Essex Lodge, since called "Washington's Lodge" was the headquarters of George Washington.
