I, George Norwood, of Northampton County, North Carolina being very sick
and weak in body but of perfect mind and memory, thanks be given unto God,
therefore calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that is
appointed for all men once to die do make and ordain this my last will
and testament, that is to say principally and first of all - I give and
recommend my soul unto the hands of God that made it and my body I recommend
to the earth to be buried in decent Christian manner, at the discretion
of my Executors, not doubting but at the general resurrection I shall receive
the same again and as touching such worldly estate as it hath pleased Almighty
God to give me in this life. I give, devise, bequeath and dispose
of the same in the following manner and form:
Item: I give and bequeath to my son,
Samuel Norwood, a parcel of land, containing 300 acres, more or less,
beginning on Spann's line on the river and running up the river to a Hickory
at the upper end of his low grounds, from hence up the hill along a line
of marked trees to Crawley's line, and all my land with the plantation
that is below them lines, to him and his heirs for ever. I likewise
give unto my said on, Samuel, the negro wench called Sarah, and her increase
forever. Also the negro boy, Ned, being at his house, and my gray
mare, and half my cattle which is at Nut Bush, and one cow and calf belonging
to the plantation on which I live, one third part of my still, one half
of my quince orchard, one third part of the fruit of my apple orchard,
one of the pare trees, that which stands next to Y.D river, called Norwood's
pare and four of the Catterron pare trees. The benefit of the said
trees he shall have during his life time.
Item: I give and bequeath to my grandson,
George Norwood, son of Nathaniel, a parcel of land containing two hundred
and forty acres more or less, beginning at a hickory on the river at the
upper end of Samuel Norwood's low ground from the said hickory along Samuel's
line to Crawley's line, then along that to the road, then up the road to
the head of the third small branch from the river, which breaks out from
the lower side of Green's creek from the road down that branch to Green's
Creek, and down the creek to the river and down the river to the first
station, to him and his heirs forever. I likewise give to him the
said George a negro girl called Lucy and her increase; also my young horse
called Peckin, my bed and furniture and one third part of my still between
him and his brother Nathaniel and also a parcel of sheep with the benefit;
the sheep he having in his possession.
Item: I give and bequeath to my grandson Nathaniel
Norwood, a parcel of land containing three hundred and ten acres more or
less, beginning at the mouth of Green's Creek and running up the creek
to the fourth branch on the lower side, then up that branch to a marked
red oak at the head of it; then a strait line from that oak to a marked
white oak called the halfway tree, standing in the fork of Green's Creek;
from thence along a line to the center of three oaks, then along a line
to the river, the line to the center of three oaks, then along a line to
the river and down the river to the first station. I likewise give
to him, the said Nathaniel, a negro girl called Amy and her increase, and
his part of the still, as above mentioned, all to him and his Heirs.
Item: I give to my grandson, John Norwood,
son of William Norwood, a parcel of land containing one hundred and sixty
acres more or less, purchased of Crawley beginning at a marked Red Oak
corner tree, next the falling Run between Samuel Norwood's and Fry's from
the said oak southwardly along the line to the road, then up the road to
the head of the Third branch below Green's Creek; from the road down that
branch to Green's Creek, then up Green's Creek a small distance to the
fourth branch, up the fourth branch to a marked Red Oak at the road, then
a strait line from that oak to a marked white oak called the halfway tree
standing in the fork of Green's Creek, from thence along a line to the
first station to him and his heirs forever. I likewise give to him,
the said John, a negro girl called Pat, and her increase for ever.
Item: I give to my son, William Norwood,
the half of my cattle at Nutbush and one cow and calf belonging to the
plantation whereon I Iive, one parcel of sheep that he hath in his possession
and one third part of my still. I likewise give to him a negro fellow
called Charles which fellow he shall take possession of vie years after
next November; until which time he shall work on the plantation where I
live; for the benefit of George and Nathaniel, sons of Nathaniel Norwood.
Item: I give to my son, Samuel Norwood,
a negro woman called Bess, to take possession of her five years after next
November, until which time she shall work on the plantation whereon I now
live, for the benefit of George and Nathaniel, sons of Nathaniel Norwood.
Item: I give unto Elizabeth, Mary and
Sarah, daughters of Nathaniel Norwood parcels of sheep which they have
in their possession.
Item: I give all my hogs to be equally
divided among my three sons, William, Nathaniel and Samuel as they can
agree.
Item: The aforesaid gifts which I made
to Nathaniel, son of Nathaniel Norwood, is to him and his heirs forever,
and if he die without issue his brother John shall inherit the same.
Item: I give Ten Pounds twelve shillings
and six pence Virginia money to be made in rings with the first letters
of my name engraved on them for each grand child I have.
And lastly, I appoint my three sons, William,
Nathaniel and Samuel, my Executors to see that this my last will be performed
and I do hereby utterly disallow, revoke and disanul all and every other
former Testaments will, legacies and bequests by me in any ways before
named, willed, and bequeathed, notifying and confirm this and no other
to be my last will and Testament. I have in witness set my hand and
fixed my seal the 21st day of April 1749.
