Recommeded Reading List

tree-dusk.gif (40611 bytes)

I really want to stress the responsibility of the parent to determine what a child should or should not read. You may not want your child to read some of these books. That is your choice and your right. You really need to know what they are reading and be able to discuss it with them. I know this isn't easy . I will help if I can. The people in my church ask me about books, and I tell them what I know about them. They then decide if their children should read them. Email me and I will help if I can.

This list will have books added to it from time to time.

Adamson, Joy

Born Free

This is an animal book.

Alcott, Louisa May

Little Women

These are good safe books. Good teachings. All of her books are enjoyable.

Little Men

The first is better then the second.

Bagnold, Enid

National Velvet

If your child likes horses, she or he may very well like this book.

Brink, Carol Rohrau

Caddie Woodlawn

Bronte, Charlotte

Jane Eyre

Older readers will most like this. May of the young ladies in my church enjoyed this book.

Bronte, Emily

Withering Heights

Buck, Pearl

The Good Earth

Mature themes

Bunyan, John

The Holy War

Anyone who loves Jesus should read these two books by Bunyan.

Pilgrims Progress

At one time Pilgrims Progress was a read along with the Bible.

Carroll, Lewis

Alice in Wonderland

Clemens, Samuel

(Mark Twain)

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

These are very good books, but the parent needs to be aware that Twain belittles the Christian life. Still these books are well worth reading. Talk about them with your children.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

There is a scene in this book where Huck decides that if God wants Tom to be a slave then he doesn't want anything to do with God. Naturally this is based on a misunderstanding about God and his laws, but talk it over with your child.

Conrad, Joseph

The Heart of Darkness

Cooper, James Fenimore

The Deerslayer

One of the young ladies and many of the young men in my church loved all of Cooper's books. They are adventure stories. There is a little romance and great deal of Indian fighting.

The Last of the Mohicans

Costain, Thomas

The Silver Chalice

Crane, Stephen

The Red Badge of Courage

A couple of the young men in my church read this over and over. It is a very realistic books about the Civil War. There is a reason this is a masterpiece. Mature readers only.

Craven, Margaret

I Heard the Owl Call My Name

Dickens, Charles

David Copperfield

Many of the young men and women in my church have read most, if not all, of Dickens' books. These are hard to read for some readers, but they are more than worth it. This should be your first Dickens' book.

Oliver Twist

This book has a very graphic description of a murder.

A Tale of Two Cities

Keep very close tabs on the characters and what they are doing. This is a great book about the French Revolution. It is very good but very graphic. It is must read. Get some background on the French Revolution before you start this book.

Great Expectations

This is wonderful. A young man meets a convict in the graveyard. Soon he comes into 'great expectations.'

Dodge, Mary Mapes

Hans Brinker

Douglas, Lloyd

The Robe

A Roman slider who crucified Christ.. He was the one who won the robe .

Doyle, Arthur Conan

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes

The king of mysteries.

Eliot, George

Silas Marner

Fast, Howard

April Morning

Fitzgerakd, F. Scott

The Great Gatsby

This is on many reading lists, but I would only let older students read it. It portrays life among the idle rich of the twenty. I wouldn't have my child read it.

Forbes, Esther

Johnny Tremain

This is an excellent book about a young man's eyewitness account of the War for Independence. He meets all kinds of men right out of history. Add this to a Revolutionary war unit.

Frank, Anne

The Diary of Anne Frank

This is a true story of a Jewish family hiding from Nazis during WWII. This is Anne's ordinal journal. It has mature themes. It should be a part of any study of WWII.

Gipson, Fred

Old Yeller

This is the king of all dog stories. Every child should read this book more than once.

Gunther, John

Death Be Not Proud

This father writes about the death of his son from cancer.

Hawthorne, Nathaniel

The Scarlet Letter

This book is how the false view of Puritans began. All of the women are witches and the men immoral hypocrites. There is no real repentance from the adulteress or her lover who happens to be the preacher.

Hemingway, Ernest

The Old Man and the Sea

This is great. This must be read. There is another book that everyone must read at least once. It is a masterpiece.

Hilton, James

Good-bye, Mr. Chips

Homer

The Iliad

These may be difficult for some readers but they are full of action and war and romance.

The Odyssey

Hugo, Victor

Les Miserables

This is a tough read. It is hard going in the beginning but well worth the effort. If a person can get past the first few chapters, he will be hooked. The story is wonderful. It is also full of adventure, tare love, revenge, war, and sword fights.

Keller, Helen

The Story of My Life

This is an autobiography of a woman who was both death and blind.

Knowles, John

A Separate Peace

This has mature themes but is a wonderful book. It is a coming of age story. Two friends in a pirate school for boys during WWI.

Lee, Harper

To Kill a Mockingbird

This has mature themes but is a wonderful book. Racial hatred and rape are a part of the story. This must be read.

Lewis, C.S.

The Chronicles of Narnia

These are fanatisy books with a Christian theme.

The Call of the Wild

Fantastic book but violent. Everyone I know who has read this book, loved it. It is a masterpiece. It short and easy to read. Great book. Hunt for gold in the Yukon. Great dog book.

White Fang

This is another book about looking for gold in the Yukon. It is violent at times. It is great book for dog people.

Marshall, Cartherine

Christy

This is a wonderful book except for one part where a rape is described in way too much detail. Cut those pages out and this is a great book.

duMauier, Daphne

Rebecca

First all time gothic romance. Romance and mystery. Mature readers only. Ask me about this one if you haven't read it yourself.

If you can get through the chapters about how to hunt and kill whales, you will enjoy this classic.

O'Hara, Mary

My Friend Flicka

This is a great book about horses. This has cussing. I edit these kinds of books for children I have authority over. It is a good book, but the cussing needs to be edited out.

Orczy, Baroness

The Scarlet Pimpernel

Orwell, George

Animal Farm

This book is perfect for showing the problems with communism.

Paton, Alan

Cry, the Beloved Country

Wonderful book but only for very mature readers. Deals with South Africa.

Potok, Chaim

The Promise

This is very good, but I tell children I love not to read any of his other books. It is a great in site into the Jewish lives of the Brooklyn Jews in the 40s.

Rawlings, Marjorie

The Yearling

Another wonderful animal book. The boy raises a fawn.

Rawls, Wilson

Where the Red Fern Grows

This book ranks up there with Old Yeller. Every single child needs to read this book.

Richter, Conrad

The Light in the Forest
