Bottle-Feeding Tips

  • Never use a microwave to heat formula.
  • Be sure to follow the package directions correctly, over or underdiluting the formula can cause severe illness.

  • Should you boil your water? When you boil tap water it concentrates any lead in the water making it more dangerous. Recommendations include: having lead levels in water tested, using bottled water if the lead level is high, if levels are acceptable, letting the tap water run for two minutes before using it (parents often use the first water out of the tap in the morning which can aggravate this problem), boiling the water (if necessary) with a lid on the pot and not using lead pots for boiling water. This info is from "Milk, Money, and Madness" by Naomi Baumslag.

  • Try to feed your baby the formula within 30 minutes after you make it. If it isn't used up within about an hour, throw it away and start again with a clean bottle.
  • Switch sides as a breastfeeding mother would. Sometimes feed him while cradling him in your right arm, sometimes in your left. This will encourage the proper development of his eyes.
  • Try to always hold your baby while he drinks his bottle even when he is able to hold it himself.
  • Do not feed your baby his bottle while he is lying on his back. One reason is that this will raise his chances of getting an ear infection.
