Eula was born at the home of her parents at 901 Orchard Street, Lynchburg, Virginia.

Little is know about her first marriage to John Hammersly but when she married Carlton she stated that they went to South Carolina to get married because in those days most preachers wouldn't marry someone who had been divorced. This fact and that they didn't want anyone to know they were getting married.
